Ran Sep 7, 2026 Age guidance School years 6-8 Venue Rehearsal Room Running time 1 hour per session Tickets Price Range £156 Description Our LAMDA classes are for students in Years 6-11, designed to enhance general performance skills and confidence in public speaking. Lead by our resident LAMDA tutor Grace, classes this term will help students prepare for individual LAMDA exams in ‘Acting’ & ‘Speaking Verse & Prose’ in Spring. LAMDA is recognised to award qualifications on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) in England by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). Monday LAMDA Class Term Fees- Autumn/Winter 2026 Class for Years 6-8. 13 weekly sessions, starting back on Monday 7th September. £156 due per student (please complete separate payments per sibling attending). Florian Zeller’s The Son completes a trilogy with The Mother and The Father (produced on the Garrick Mainstage in 2024), all of which are translated by Christopher Hampton. The Son premiered at the Kiln Theatre, London, in February 2019, and transferred to the Duke of York’s Theatre in August. A film version, directed by Zeller himself, and starring Hugh Jackman, Vanessa Kirkby and Anthony Hopkins, was produced in 2022. In the midst of the celebrations arrives the chapel organist with some very disturbing news concerning the validity of their marriages. An evening of home-truths, recriminations and mayhem ensues. Reviews Sale & Altrincham Messenger's Review by Rick Bowen Till death do us part Isn't it funny, how your memory plays tricks on you. I arrived at Altrincham Garrick expecting not to enjoy 'When We Are Married' and left feeling well and truly entertained. Even though I've seen the play several times I thought, for some reason, that it was old hat. And yet, although society's rules have changed, it's remarkable how fresh and sprightly Priestley's dialogue still sounds today. He certainly has a way with words, does our JB. Three couples, all pillars of the Yorkshire community in which they live, have their lives turned upside down when they discover, to their horror, that their marriage certificates aren't worth the paper they're written on. Throw into the comedy mix a newspaper photographer whose world is permanently out of focus as a result of his penchant for the booze and a hard as nails housekeeper who's out to line her own pockets and you have the recipe for an evening of good, clean fun. You could take granny to see this, as there's nothing to offend. Maureen Casket's production zips along and the director makes sure her cast, one of the strongest ensembles seen at the Garrick this season, doesn't waste a word of Priestley's often witty script. Geoff Noar treats us to a brilliant piece of character acting as the pie eyed photographer Henry Ormonroyd and Julie Broadbent is really good as Ruby the maid. It's probably unfair to single out individuals because, to borrow a phrase from the world of sport, this is a great team performance. What I liked about this play is that the characters are real people and not shallow, plumy voiced, middle class twits getting their knickers in a twist over their potential loss of face. Indeed, had Priestley set the piece among the chattering classes it probably would have been a complete turn off. These are people who have pulled themselves up by their own boot straps and got on in life. Margaret Norris has designed a sumptuous set - a perfect backdrop for a perfect evening in the theatre. When We Are Married may have received its world premiere in the 1930's, but there's no sign of any wrinkles in this production. Enjoy. Star Rating ★★★★ M.E.N.'s Review by Julia Taylor I HAVE never, as a journalist, come across a photographer who got drunk on duty. But who can blame Henry Ormonroyd for having one too many in this classic comedy at the Garrick Theatre. After all, he has to snap three anxious couples who, after 25 years together, discover they are not legally married! Even when squiffy, Henry is a philosopher. If God had intended men to wear collars he would have put collar studs in their necks!?, he announces in his slurred way. Geoff Noar is an inspired choice for this part - character parts are his forte. J.B.Priestley's comedy was first performed in 1938 at the Manchester Opera House, six years after the Garrick opened, yet, even now when there is no longer a taboo about "living in sin", people still enjoy seeing the pompous floored. Indeed, the audience on Monday night liked it more than most. Their applause at the end was deafening. The dilemma of the three respectable couples is conveyed with well observed Yorkshire accents. They contrast with the 'lah-di-dah' voice of Gerald Forbes, (Nick Curror) the church organist who breaks the news that they are not technically wed. The hosts of the joint silver wedding party are Alderman Helliwell and his society wife, Maria (Alison Davis). How proudly David Gonet's Helliwell flaunts his local eminence and how amusing both verbally and facially is his reaction to his downfall. The other two couples, the Parkers and the Soppitts, appear to be enjoying married bliss but, when the ties are apparently cut, they express their real feelings. Mike Shaw's Councillor Albert Parker is selfish, conceited, and above all 'stingy' treating his long-suffering wife Annie (Margaret Leslie) with contempt. She appears unconcerned but, my, how she changes when released from wedlock. The situation is reversed with the Soppitts. It is the husband, Herbert, (Bill Platt) who is downtrodden and his wife, Clara (Janet Slade) who has the upper hand. Bill and Janet give first class performances when Herbert finds his voice and Clara is placed under his newly found firm thumb. The play brims with gentle humour particularly when Dawn Flint's raunchy Lottie upsets the apple cart even further. I like the way Priestley plans the stage appearances of the men, women and couples at different times enabling us to understand their motives. The ending, like the final bars of a symphony reaches a well-rounded crescendo and Henry Ormonroyd finally gets his explosive photo! A true story based on a group of WI members in Yorkshire who were the originators of the nude charity calendar idea in the mid 1990’s, this daring idea has been copied many times since, but some would say never bettered. The Calendar Girls film grossed more than £60m at the box office worldwide, while the play – which Firth adapted from his film script – has taken more than £21m in ticket sales alone. Certainly, as far as the Altrincham Garrick’s presentation of this play is concerned, it’s a careful mixture of nimble acting skills and canny casting in this story which, while it deals with the dreaded big “C”, is humorous and ultimately uplifting. At the centre of the strong ensemble cast is Beverley Stuart-Cole, who relishes her role as Chris and drives the calendar project with head girl levels of determination. Beverley exceled in her WI conference speech at the beginning of Act 2, which received a heart-warming and well deserved applause from the audience. The cast of game actresses worked well as a unit and generated a natural rapport with delightful performances all round radiating a sense of warmth. Annie - the recent widow played by Janet Slade - encourages the ladies to think outside their frocks! Her subtle struggle to remain upbeat through her grief was beautifully portrayed which I imagine could easily be lost amongst Firth's loftier characters and comic one liners, but Janet kept us all in line reminding us where the heart of this play truly lies. The photography shoot / nude scene was handled with comic bravado, portrayed not too dissimilar to a silent comedy routine, milking any discomfort the audience (or even the cast) may have about such unseemly revelations! This, and rightly so, was the play's highlight, the enactment was fulfilling and delivered a mix of emotions from fear to accomplishment, laughter to surprise, undoubtedly the peak to the play as I’m sure was intended during its original creation. Previous Next Roger Metcalfe Without the work that Roger did for the Garrick at the time, the major redevelopment of 1999 would probably not have happened. His immense support for that endeavour mustn't overshadow his many acting roles between the mid 1970s and the mid 2000s, and many patrons at the time will never forget his stage appearances. He was very able portraying the establishment figure that many comedies poke fun at, and equally well as the towering stage presence and brooding intensity that many dramas require. Roger served on the Executive Committee and on the Board of Trustees, and it was his role handling Press and Public Relations in 1998 and 1999 that contributed so much to the redevelopment at the end of that century. Previous Next Ian Crownshaw Ian was Head of Lighting for several seasons in the 1980s and 90s. The first play he worked on was Joking Apart by Alan Ayckbourn, in 1981. Highly committed to the Garrick, he built up a departmental team, was keen on installing new tech into the theatre, designed some sets, and acted as an ASM occasionally. He was also heavily involved with Alistair Donkin's Gilbert and Sullivan Society, one of the annual visiting societies to the theatre. Back to In Memoriam page

Previous Next Barbara Fraser Barbara is best known at the Garrick for her role as Bookkeeper in the 1980s and 90s, when she kept a tight grip on the budgets and expenditure of Department Heads. It was not unusual to receive a late-night phone call asking for an explanation why a particular purchase had been made. Her fun side came out in her regular performances in the Old Time Music Halls in the 1970s and 80s (see photo), and she occasionally took small roles in plays. Previous Next Stevie Salem (née Holt) Stevie was a firm Garrick audience favourite for over 20 years, appearing in over thirty shows in a leading role. Her first play at the theatre was in Birds on a Wing , in 1972. Her other main credits include Crown Matrimonial , Private Lives , Play it Again Sam , After the Ball , Blithe Spirit (when she played Elvira), California Suite , Having a Ball , A Taste of Honey , See How They Run (in which she played Penelope Toop), and Steel Magnolias . Her final performance on the Garrick stage was in Last Tango in Whitby in 1993. Stevie also appeared in musicals such as Marie and Annie , as well as several Old Time Music Halls. Previous Next Chris Shepherd Chris was a journalist with the Oldham Evening Chronicle and worked and performed at the Oldham Coliseum. In 1982, the then Artistic Director, Chris Fogg, cast Chris as Norman Bates in the World Amateur Premiere of Psycho . This obviously created huge media interest, which resulted in audiences queueing round the block. From then, until his untimely death in 1987, Chris directed many plays at the Garrick including How the Other Half Loves by Alan Ayckbourn, 'The Killing of Sister George , The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie , Agatha Christie's Dial M for Murder and, most famously for all who saw it, Having a Ball by Alan Bleasedale which, by the end of its run, was a total sell-out with some ladies including the WI booking more than once! He also directed a massive version of The Tempest , set in the future on an isolated planet. He was also an accomplished musician, and played the piano in many Manchester hotels, bars and pubs. The rest of the world in which he strives to survive sees him as a freak, incapable of thought or feeling and the children he comes into contact with pelt him with stones. Sadly, we still live in a society obsessed with appearances which gives Mary Shelley’s classic chiller a resonance that still rings true today. This timeless tale also offers a salutary reminder, if it was needed, of scientists trying to ‘play God.’ In 30 years of reviewing amateur theatre I can’t remember a performance as deeply affecting as that of Rhys Nuttall who plays The Creature. Now I challenge anyone in the audience not to be moved by Nuttall, as he totters to his feet in the opening scene and begins a life of unmitigated torment and rejection. It may only be January but I can say this performance will not be bettered on the amateur stage for many years to come, for both its searing intensity and unbridled physicality. The scenes in which The Creature learns to speak and read and appreciate the great works of literature thanks to the patient and kindly De Lacey, his only friend in the world are beautifully played by Nuttall and Hugh Everett are perfectly played. This exceptional and deeply disturbing production by Barry Purves transports us to a world that whips away our collective comfort blanket, a world where the sun never seems to shine. Bad productions just aren’t in this man’s DNA, are they? Nick Dear’s adaptation refreshes Shelley’s wonderful novel and while it gives the original a contemporary feel it also remains faithful to it. The production contains a very disturbing scene of sexual violence. You simply must not miss this production which will move you and scare you. But the scariest thing for me was how people reacted to The Creature, for me that was the truly monstrous thing. Once again the Garrick delivers – and then some. Quite brilliant. Star rating – ***** Paul Wilcox – North West End Uk These are interesting times at the Garrick Playhouse in the leafy south Manchester suburb of Altrincham. Under the aegis of Artistic Director Joseph Meighan, their programming is broadening its appeal beyond the traditional light comedy and murder mystery, into edgier and darker territory. So, we find 2022 kicking off with an absolutely cracking adaptation of the Mary Shelley gothic masterpiece, both chilling and thought provoking and with a simply stunning central performance. Those patrons expecting a hoary old ‘Boris Karloff with a bolt through the neck’ rendition, would have been disappointed. With Direction and Set Design in the capable hands of Barry J C Purves, this was always going to be a more delicate study on the nature of humanity. By using Nick Dear’s 2011 National Theatre adaptation of the Shelley novel, placing The Creature (Rhys Nuttall) at the centre of the story gave both pace and arc to the two-hour production, dispensing with the unnecessary backstory of the creator. We begin at the moment of creation with the obsessive and compulsive Victor Frankenstein (Tom Cunningham) bringing life to the inanimate creature. The two-level set with a simple curtain is wholly black, lit with white spotlights casting long shadows onto the walls of the theatre, both effective and appropriate as it emerges from a metallic tub. From this point on Rhys Nuttall’s creature simply dominates, his performance is stunningly crafted as The Creature, with each step in his development into sentience carefully choreographed and incorporated. The movement of Nuttall around the stage in these scenes is masterful, balletic grace combined with a strength that was hypnotic to observe, as each new sensation was encountered it produced both comedy and pathos without any dialogue being required. By turns, apelike and clumsy he instils meaning into each gesture, holding the audience in rapt attention every time he is on stage. As the story progresses, we observe the best and worst of mankind. The Creature encounters both hostility and kindness wandering through the world, searching first for the answer to the question ‘Who am I?’, morphing into his quest to find his creator and create a companion in his loneliness. The scenes with De Lacey (Hugh Everett), a blind peasant who teaches The Creature to read and showing him the only warmth he encounters, are delicate and tender and his development towards humanity serves to make later scenes involving both murder and rape all the more compelling. An issue with such a strong central performance was that the parallel story of Victor Frankenstein was somewhat overshadowed in the narrative, with Cunningham needing more obsessional madness in his performance to match the physicality and dominance of Nuttall. In the same way Cumberbatch/Miller found in the original NT production, doing this allows the relationship with his fiancé Elizabeth (Amy Lou Harris) to take a more prominent part in the latter story and provide some balance. Victor Frankenstein’s story is a sorry tale of how single-minded passion can fatally cloud judgment and the play asks us whether a person is innately good or evil, or is it society which dictates our character and actions. Overall, an ambitious and successful realisation of an excellent adaptation, lifted to another level by a superb performance from Nuttall as The Creature. Amateur theatre of the very highest quality North West End UK Rating: ★★★★ Brian Madden – Number9 Mary Shelley was just 18 years old when she wrote what is now considered a classic novel; Frankenstein. 206 years since she first began writing the novel, it is still being performed in theatres around the world. Nowadays it is more associated with Hallowe’en than a cold night in January. However, I certainly was given a night to remember and think this will be a production spoken about for months to come. People often make the mistake that Frankenstein is the name of the monster, however, it is the name of the scientist who creates it. In this production the ‘monster’ is known as The Creature – a lonely figure who just wants to be loved. I’ve seen a few productions at the Altrincham Garrick over the years, and some have been beter than others, but I can hands-down say that their 2022 production of Frankenstein is the best thing I’ve ever seen on stage at the Garrick. I’d go as far as saying a professional theatre such as The Royal Exchange would have been honoured to have a production of this quality on its stage. Some people have many preconceived ideas about amateur dramatics, or as I prefer to call it ‘non-professional theatre’. However, I would ask any of those to watch the Garrick’s production of Frankenstein to challenge their views. Rhys Nuttall was absolutely sublime as ‘The Creature’. Everything about his portrayal of The Creature was just on point – his movements, posture, the way he brought the character to life. Some actors at the best of times struggle to lift the script off the page, Nuttall did it without even needing words. It came as no surprise to me that he was also the Movement Director for the production – you could tell each step he took was carefully executed. His presence was one to behold in a way it almost made the rest of the cast irrelevant. In the beginning, anyone would be scared of The Creature – a semi-naked man who can barely move or speak. However, as the story unfolds we witness him learning how to live. He meets a blind peasant played by Hugh Everett and spends a whole year in his company. It’s here where he learns to speak and almost experiences what it is like to be human. He also not only learns to read but to appreciate literature. Until then everyone just sees him as a freak, incapable of love. It’s rather ironic that it takes a blind to see this. These scenes were a pleasure to watch and just so beautiful to see two people learn so much from each other. The entire production takes the audience on a journey through the seasons. This was fantastically captured by the director; Barry J.C. Purves. I especially loved the scenes which included the elements of leaves and snow. From the word go the audience is transported to another world, which is all you can ask of any director. When you look beneath the surface Frankenstein is actually quite a sad story. The themes of loneliness and rejection are key to the production. This was my first time seeing Frankenstein performed and will most certainly be watching it again. It really got me thinking, how much have we really moved on as a society – if we see something unusual, do we try to offer to help, or do we walk away? Frankenstein does raise a lot of questions – what is it that defines good and evil? Is someone born evil, or is it something that society makes them? And ultimately what are the consequences of our actions? The production serves as a reminder that we shouldn’t tamper with things and let them be. Reviews Rick Bowen from StageStruck - 4 Stars THE first thing I have to say about this play, the emotional equivalent of being hit by a train, is don’t be fooled by its cosy sounding title, with images of suburban cosiness. It couldn’t be further from the truth in Jane Upton’s remarkable piece of writing that’s both funny and painfully evocative. Joanne and Lisa, who had an almost sisterly bond until they separated, ache for a better life even though the spectre of sexual exxploitation lurks in the background and threatens to crush their dreams. Amy, described as being like a baby by the formidable and feisty Joanne is simply looking for somewhere to belong.. As the three girls there’s an unsettling authenticity to their performances with Georgina Brame, Natalia Leaper and Isabel Stuart-Cole deserving a far bigger audience than the one that trickled into the Lauriston on opening night. While Upton’s play is a very difficult watch in places, theatre is at its best when it gives a voice to the voiceless and humanises issues like child abuse. Director Meg Brassington, so, so funny in the lead role in the Garrick’s production of the Vicar of Dibley, proves she’s equally at home with the serious stuff and I also liked her very convincing litter strewn set which formed the girls’ hillside sanctuary. It was a brave decision for the Garrick to stage such a challenging play which deserves to do very brisk business at its box office. Previous Next Sheila Hine Sheila had a long and distinguished career in amateur dramatics, at both the Garrick and the Wilmslow Green Room. At the Garrick, she was a prolific and versatile actress, performing in numerous plays from the 1960s into the 2000s. Her first time on stage was in Goodnight Mr Puffin in 1965 and some of her other credits include The Killing of Sister George , Relatively Speaking , Vivat! Vivat! Regina (as Elizabeth I), Cause Celebre , and The Wizard of Oz (as Aunt Em). Her final performance was in Les Liaisons Dangereuse in 2005. She was also an occasional director, and worked backstage in make-up, as an ASM and as prompt. Sheila was equally busy at the Wilmslow Green Room during the same period. As an actress, her first role there was in Nude with Violin in 1966. She also directed productions, and was involved backstage in make-up, wardrobe and as a prompt. Previous Next Christine Sammon (née Adams) Christine was a wonderful singer and talented actress. When she joined the Garrick in the early 1990s, she was already well known on the local amateur operatic circuit. Throughout the nineties she took a leading part in many Garrick musicals, before her sad and untimely passing. She was also involved in two highly successful and enjoyable Playathons - The Boyfriend and Irene . These were plays put on with only 48 hours notice, to raise funds for the STAGE Appeal. The secret play was announced at 7.30pm on a Friday night and the entire Garrick family was involved in presenting the full-length production at 7.30pm on the Sunday night with full staging, sound and lighting, costume, musical arrangements and choreography with all books down. The greasy spoon in the bar was kept open throughout the entire weekend. A Playathon was a testing - yet ultimately rewarding - challenge, and Christine was an enthusiastic participant. Previous Next Jeanne Anderson Jeanne was a leading dramatic actress at the Garrick from the late 1960s through to her final play in 1985. Her first play at the Garrick was in Fools Paradise in October 1968 and she then took on numerous lead roles right up to her tragic, untimely death in 1985, after falling from a stepladder. Her credits included Under Milk Wood ; Vivat!Vivat! Regina (for which she received a Manchester Evening News Oscar as Best Actress playing Mary, Queen of Scots); Portia in Merchant of Venice ; Habeus Corpus ; A Woman of No Importance ; Cause Celebre ; The Dresser and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie . The last time she appeared on the Garrick stage was as Ethel Thayer in On Golden Pond in 1985. Like most people on the acting list at that time, Jeanne played a full role backstage. For me, one of the most important things is for the TV viewers to take the characters to the hearts and warm to them. Here we have an embarrassment of riches, from the bumbling Private Baldrick to the crown prince of the put down, Captain Edmund Blackadder, brought so engagingly to life on the small screen by Tony Robinson and Rowan Atkinson. I never thought I’d feel the same deep seated warmth for these characters again. But in Charlie Tomlinson’s flawless and fabulous stage production I felt it - in spades. As Blackadder, Steven Finney treats us a one man comedy masterclass and displays a sense of timing that is simply sublime. He can also make you laugh when he doesn’t actually say anything and while there are echoes of Atkinson, he’s more than succeeded in putting his individual stamp on this classic part. Michael Gallagher is equally memorable as his sidekick and the butt of his jokes, Baldrick. There’s a natural rapport between the two of them. Rehearsals must have been a hoot. In this particular outing, Blackadder and Baldrick are fighting for King and country in the First World War. They’re trying to keep their spirits up as they’re waiting for the next offensive, “the big push,” to begin. While Blackadder is unashamedly cynical about the War and what he sees as a senseless loss of life, the scriptwriters, Richard Curtis, Ben Elton, John Lloyd and Rowan Atkinson, never cross into irreverence and maintain the respectful tone needed when tackling a subject as difficult as this one. If their script was a drink it would definitely be vintage champagne and not a word is wasted by a cast that includes a superb Hugh Everett performance as the unbelievably dense Lieutenant The Honourable George Colthurst St Barleigh. This production made me laugh until my sides ached but when the ending came the tears were in my eyes. And I, as a lifelong fan of this TV classic, knew what was coming. Star Rating ★★★★★ Review by Max Eden for North West End If there has ever been a time to revisit the Classic BBC television series; Blackadder, it would be this week - with this Sunday marking the centenary of the end of the First World War and the First World War being very much in the forefront of people’s minds. So, when I had the opportunity to see the theatre production of Blackadder Goes Forth at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse this week, I jumped at the chance. First things first, this production is anything but amateur, it’s slick, funny and professional throughout. The script written by Richard Curtis, Rowan Atkinson, Ben Elton and John Lloyd’s is as razor sharp as it was when it first aired with hilarious set ups and gags throughout and has been cleverly adapted for the stage. As with most productions; the cast can make or break a show like this and in this case; it’s the cast who makes this show as powerful as it is. The lead; Captain Blackadder is played by Steve Finney who has embraced the mannerisms and style of Rowan Atkinson down to the very last detail, it’s no surprise when you realise he’s played Blackadder before in 2015 because he’s just too good not too. Finney is joined by a stellar cast including the hilarious Michael Gallagher who plays Baldrick and David Beddy who plays General Sir Anthony; both of which are wickedly funny with impeccable timing and delivery throughout. The entire cast deserve high praise for this production and I couldn’t fault any of them for what was a magnificent performance. Directed by Charlie Tomlinson who also plays Field Marshal Haig; you are immediately transported back to the trenches of WW1 and thanks to an impressive set design which features full sized trenches and dorms which are West End quality sets. This show is wickedly funny throughout until the end, but nothing can prepare you for that final scene which so cleverly puts the men who fought the war right in the forefront of your mind; the choices they had to make and the sacrifice they did in order for us to live today. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room tonight as poppies fell from above once the cast had gone ‘over the top’. A wonderful production with a stellar cast and witty script which poignantly remembered the fallen just when we weren’t expecting it. Verdict: Anything but Amateur, this is magnificent!
