  • The Father | Altrincham Garrick

Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production The Father Psychological Drama by Florian Zeller and translated by Christopher Hampton Ran May 6, 2024 - May 11, 2024 Age guidance 14+ Venue Main House Running time 2.5 hours (inc. 20 mins interval) Tickets Price Range £10 - £16 Description The Father (Le Père) is a play about a man called Andre. Now 80 years old, Andre was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pyjamas, and he can’t find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control… A sobering and realistic family story, and an unsentimental, emotionally intense look at the world through the eyes of a man experiencing dementia. The Father , in this English translation by Christopher Hampton, was commissioned by the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal, Bath and premiered in October 2014. The production transferred to the Tricycle Theatre, London, in May 2015, and subsequently to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End. The Father was awarded the Moliere Award for Best Play and the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor. • Waiting for Godot | Altrincham Garrick

Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production Waiting for Godot The Irish Studio Season: Tragic comedy about the meaning of life and the absurdity of existence Ran Jan 21, 2025 - Jan 26, 2025 Age guidance 12+ Venue Altrincham Garrick Studio Running time TBC Tickets Price Range £12.50 - £14.50 Description Written by Samuel Beckett Directed by Celia Bonner Two wandering tramps, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a lonely tree, to meet up with Mr. Godot, an enigmatic figure in a world where time, place and memory are blurred and meaning is where you find it. The tramps hope that Godot will change their lives for the better. Instead, two eccentric travellers arrive, one man on the end of the other's rope. The results are both funny and dangerous in this existential masterpiece. When Samuel Beckett's play exploded on to the London stage in 1953, it shocked as many people as it delighted. There had never been a play like it; indeed it was said that: "Beckett has achieved a theoretical impossibility—a play in which nothing happens, that yet keeps audiences glued to their seats.” Today, Waiting for Godot is accepted as one of the most significant plays of the 20th century. • Jumpers for Goalposts | Altrincham Garrick

Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production Jumpers for Goalposts A hilarious and heart-warming comedy Ran May 9, 2022 - May 14, 2022 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description A hilarious and heart-warming comedy about football, friendship and finding your way. “Barely Athletic” are part of a four-team five-a-side LGBTQ+ football league which Viv, their bullish head coach, is desperate to win. Or if they can’t win, at least they should try not to lose. Chucked out of the “Lesbian Rovers” for being too bossy, she desperately tries to instil some competitive spirit into the boys. Problem is, Beardy Geoff is copping off with the opposition, Danny is nursing a painful secret, Luke only joined because he fancies Danny, and Viv’s brother-in-law Joe is trying to cope with his grief after losing his wife. Together, they might just be able to claw back up from the bottom of the league… Tom Wells’ drama bears the hallmarks of his warm comedic style, which were displayed in his previous hit play “The Kitchen Sink”, and is a paean to the virtues of friendship and love. Jumpers for Goalposts premiered at Watford Palace Theatre in 2013, before touring the UK, including a run at the Bush Theatre, London. Warning: Strong language Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is proud to support the George House Trust. Since 1985, George House Trust has been inspiring people living with HIV to live healthy, confident lives by providing HIV support, advice and advocacy services. For more information email: talk@ght.org.uk Reviews Review by Rick Bowen at Stagestruck Jumpers For Goalposts will, on the evidence of Monday night’s performance, attract a different, younger audience. For far too many years Altrincham Garrick has been seen as a safe night out for older people and the appointment of artistic director Joseph Meighan, a dynamic and adventurous twenty something, is about to change that misguided perception. A quiet revolution is taking place on Barrington Road and it feels so exciting and exhilarating to be part of it. But this theatre is working hard to get the message across that the Garrick is a theatre for everybody. All power to their elbow, say I. Jumpers for Goalposts follow the misfortunes of Barely Athletic, a five-a-side team largely made up of gay men who struggle with the basics of the beautiful game. This doesn’t stop Viv, their straight talking coach with a very short fuse, encouraging her clueless charges to try to win the league in which they play. It’s certainly a league with a difference – one team plays in drag! The play takes place in the club’s dressing room, an ideal backdrop for writer Tom Wells to delve into the private lives of the players, including a burgeoning relationship between Danny and Luke. Danny carries a secret that he feels unable to share with the childlike Luke, a lovable geek and a study in social awkwardness. Joe Meighan, who directs this engaging, absorbing and heart-warming comedy must have thought all his birthdays had come at once when Dan Ellis and Mason Lockwood turned up to audition for these roles. If anyone was ever born to play these parts it’s these two actors and Lockwood, who gets the funniest lines as Luke, displays a sense of comic timing that is simply second to none. Beverley Stuart-Cole is highly believable as Viv, Sebastian Farrell is also enjoyable as the team’s token straight man Joe, aka the keeper who couldn’t catch a cold and Lewis Sewell is perfect as the crackpot Beardy Geoff. Throughout the production the cast convinces the audience they’re watching a real football team, complete with the personality clashes you find in all organisations, sporting or otherwise. They say football is a game of two halves and that old adage can certainly be applied to Jumpers for Goalposts , with the best one liners saved for the second half. While this play contains some strong language it’s in context and gives the play a realistic feel. It’s sure to strike a chord with anyone whose set foot inside a sports club’s dressing room while not alienating those who haven’t. Great fun, with a dash of poignancy thrown in. Until May 14. Tickets are available from 0161 928 1677. Star rating **** In aid of The George House Trust. Ran Dec 9, 2022 - Jan 2, 2023 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description OUR FESTIVE SHOW FOR 2022/23 IS OUR PANTOMIME VERSION OF ‘DICK WHITTINGTON’ The Garrick Pantomime Paved With Gold! BOOKING NOW! Dick Whittington’s heading to that there London to seek his fame and fortune – he’s heard the streets are paved with gold! With his trusty cat by his side, he gets a job at Alderman Fitzwarren’s Store but the city is under attack from the most villainous vermin of them all; King Rat! With the help of his new love Alice, Fairy Bow Bells, Sarah the Cook and her silly son Idle Jack, will Dick be able to vanquish the vermin? Oh Yes he will! For this is a Garrick Pantomime after all! Book now for this purrfect Christmas treat – it’ll be a Whitting-tonne of fun! Reviews Rick Bowen at Stagestruck ALL good pantos live or die by their leads and in Conor Collins, who plays King Rat, the Garrick has an actor born to be a baddie. When I saw this. on its freezing cold opening night, Collins managed to provoke the audience into booing and hissing him with little effort on his part every time he walked onstage. Even big kids like me couldn’t resist the temptation to join in, even though us critics are meant to be a snooty, buttoned up bunch. At the other end of the spectrum there are the goodies. Ethan Beer as Dick and Hannah Dorothy as the evening’s love interest, Alice Fitzwarren. Unless you’ve had a sense of humour bypass you’ll find it impossible not to warm to Phil Edwards as Sarah the Cook and there’s a kooky bond between this panto natural and Daniel Ellis who plays his son, Idle Jack. I also really also enjoyed Bev Stuart Cole’s Fairy Bow Bells as the action careers towards it climax. It’s hard to believe Cole has been member at this theatre for more than 30 years, so fresh and invigorating is her performance. Tom Whalley’s script is a mixture of daft dad jokes and a healthy smattering of saucier lines which are aimed obviously at the adults and are sure to go over the heads of the kids. Pantos are a great way to introduce children to the theatre and there was dancing in the aisle during the musical numbers in the second half, courtesy of a group of tots who’d made it their mission to have a good time. Also, how good it was to escape from the pressures of modern life and enjoy an evening of unbridled fun. Until January 2. He was also a talented writer, writing and performing in many shows and cabarets, some of which he produced in the Garrick bar to raise funds for the STAGE Appeal. These were often zany events, but always highly entertaining. Even after he had his leg amputated, he still performed and was able to access the stage via the lift from the dressing room installed after the 1999 renovation. Nick was a great patron of the bar, where his conversations were always highly amusing. He is fondly remembered for his sense of humour and his indomitable spirit despite his handicap. • Janet Slade | Altrincham Garrick

Previous Next Janet Slade Janet joined the Garrick in 1986. She appeared in over 70 plays on the Mainstage, in the Studio and at the Edinburgh Fringe. She was a primary school teacher who, for 14 very successful years, became heavily involved in gymnastics, primarily as a choreographer to international level. Her first protégé, Kathy Williams MBE, competed at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. After she retired from the sport, and because she had studied Drama and Dance at Didsbury College, it was natural that she should try her hand at acting. Following a successful Garrick audition, she very quickly showed her versatility by being cast in 4 productions in her first season including as 15-year-old Ruby in 'When we are Married' and as 60-year-old Aunt Edie in 'Sailor Beware'. Known as a director's dream, with immaculate comic timing, she was cast in many comedies and farces, and she used to say that one of her greatest thrills on stage was delivering a laugh line and then waiting a split second to hear the audience explode with laughter. A GMDF and NODA award winning actress, she was also heavily involved off-stage, prompting many productions, serving pints behind the bar, choreographing several musicals, and serving on the Play Selection and Casting Committee. One theatre critic wrote 'Janet Slade might be small in stature but she absolutely fills the stage'. Audiences agreed. Back to In Memoriam page

Diane Samuels’ seminal play, Kindertransport , imagines the fate of one such child. Nine-year-old Eva is taken from her home in Germany and sent to Manchester to live with the Miller family. At first, she clashes with her foster mother, Lil, but slowly a bond of trust forms between them. After she learns that her parents have failed to escape Germany, the Millers become her family, and a new identity begins to form. After the war is over, she changes her name to Evelyn and acquires British citizenship. Over thirty years later, her now grown-up daughter, Faith stumbles across some old letters in their attic and Evelyn is forced to confront her traumatic past… Samuels deftly weaves together Evelyn’s past and present as she explores the devastating impact of the Holocaust on three generations. Now widely considered a modern classic, Kindertransport has been read and studied all over the world. It is not an obligation. It is a courtesy extended by the Prime Minister to bring her Majesty up to speed.” Spanning sixty years from the 1950s through to the 21st century, Peter Morgan’s The Audience vividly illustrates what might have happened between the late Queen Elizabeth II and her Prime Ministers behind closed doors during their weekly meetings. From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while Queen Elizabeth II remained constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister. A creative mix of historical evidence, back room gossip and literary imaginings, this play is a witty, thought provoking and a highly entertaining piece of unmissable theatre. The Audience has received sell out runs in both London and on Broadway. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding. Best wishes, Sarah Reilly (Operations Director) & Joseph Meighan (Artistic Director) By Noel Coward Directed by Carole Carr At the centre of his own universe sits matinee idol Garry Essendine: suave, hedonistic and too old, says his wife, to be having numerous affairs. His life is spiralling out of control… He is plagued with worry about his looming theatrical tour of Africa, being middle aged, his receding hairline and the friends who bring their bizarre problems to him. Engulfed by an escalating identity crisis, as his sprawling myriad of relationships compete for his attention, Garry’s few remaining days at home are a chaotic whirlwind of love, sex, panic and soul-searching. Noël Coward’s Present Laughter premiered in the early years of the Second World War just as such privileged lives were threatened with fundamental social change but now this play is a surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness and, of course, is extremely funny!
