Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production RELAXED PERFORMANCE of Goldilocks & The Three Bears A rip-ROARing Panto FUR all the Family! Ran Dec 13, 2025 Age guidance 3+ Venue Main House Running time Tickets Price Range £15 - £19 Description WHAT IS A RELAXED PERFORMANCE? If you are a parent, guardian, or work with people with learning or sensory disabilities – such as those on the autism spectrum – you’ll know how difficult it can sometimes be for them to attend regular theatre performances; loud noises, lighting effects and large crowds can make stage shows overwhelming. At Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, we believe that everyone should be able to experience the magic and wonder of live theatre, and our Relaxed Performance of Goldilocks and the Three Bears will provide the same fantastical Pantomime but with an atmosphere and attitude in the auditorium that makes everyone feel comfortable and safe. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR RELAXED PERFORMANCE: At a Relaxed Performed, you are free to: - Come and go from the auditorium as you wish, even during the show - Express yourself as loudly as you like, or with physical movement, without judgement - Access the Theatre and auditorium early. You’ll also notice that we will reduce the sound and lighting to lessen sensory overload, and no pyrotechnics or loud bangs will appear in the performance. Donations. The Altrincham Garrick is a registered charity and your kind donations will support future developments. Support Altrincham Garrick Playhouse. I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me. It's easy. The Altrincham Garrick is a registered charity, and we receive no public funding from any other organisation, or from our regional or local council. Our income comes mainly from the tickets that our audience buys, with smaller contributions from elsewhere in the Garrick (for example: from our GAPA education programme, and from daytime rental of the Car Park). The building dates from 1933, with ever-increasing operational and production costs. Our energy bills are high (productions use a lot of electricity; our bills are sometimes over £3,000 per month) and we have a small number of dedicated staff whom we pay. Our programme of building improvements is currently aimed at reducing winter heating bills. However, maintenance and urgent repairs take precedence, and this can often cost 10s of thousands of pounds per year. On top of all this, we have to continue investing in the equipment that a theatre needs, to keep on presenting productions of the high quality that our audiences deserve. Two major infrastructure projects are currently urgently required. Our roof is in very poor condition and needs a major overhaul. We also need to find money to install air-conditioning in the main auditorium. The Garrick aims to do all the above while still maintaining our low ticket prices. Occasional increases are unavoidable, but our goal is to make sure that theatre is available to all in the community, at a price that they can afford. We exist today due to the generosity and support of local people and businesses. We are very grateful to those who not only pay to see a show, but who also buy a drink in the bar, buy a programme, and indulge in sweets or an ice-cream from our kiosk. We need you and the local community to support us, so we can continue doing what we do so well. Business sponsorships are also very welcome, click here for more . Garrick Production Kindertransport Date range Tickets £13 - £15 Age guidance 12+ Venue STUDIO Theatre Trigger warning Find out more Book now Running time TBC Group bookings Find out more Accessibility Find out more Written by Diane Samuels Directed by Celia Bonner Between 1939 until the outbreak of World War II, nearly 10,000 Jewish children were taken from their families in Nazi-occupied Germany and sent to live with foster families in Britain. Diane Samuels’ seminal play, Kindertransport , imagines the fate of one such child. Nine-year-old Eva is taken from her home in Germany and sent to Manchester to live with the Miller family. At first, she clashes with her foster mother, Lil, but slowly a bond of trust forms between them. After she learns that her parents have failed to escape Germany, the Millers become her family, and a new identity begins to form. After the war is over, she changes her name to Evelyn and acquires British citizenship. Over thirty years later, her now grown-up daughter, Faith stumbles across some old letters in their attic and Evelyn is forced to confront her traumatic past… Samuels deftly weaves together Evelyn’s past and present as she explores the devastating impact of the Holocaust on three generations. Now widely considered a modern classic, Kindertransport has been read and studied all over the world. Age Guidance: 12+ PLEASE NOTE - The performance on Sunday 25th January starts at the earlier time of 7pm to allow for a post show Q&A session with the Holocaust Centre North. • The Audience | Altrincham Garrick

Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production The Audience Innovative, multi-award winning play by the acclaimed writer Peter Morgan Ran May 20, 2024 - May 25, 2024 Age guidance 10+ Venue Main House Running time 2.5 hours (inc. 20 mins interval) Tickets Price Range £10 - £16 Description “Every week the Queen of the United Kingdom has a private audience with her Prime Minister. It is not an obligation. It is a courtesy extended by the Prime Minister to bring her Majesty up to speed.” Spanning sixty years from the 1950s through to the 21st century, Peter Morgan’s The Audience vividly illustrates what might have happened between the late Queen Elizabeth II and her Prime Ministers behind closed doors during their weekly meetings. From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while Queen Elizabeth II remained constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister. A creative mix of historical evidence, back room gossip and literary imaginings, this play is a witty, thought provoking and a highly entertaining piece of unmissable theatre. The Audience has received sell out runs in both London and on Broadway. • Betrayal | Altrincham Garrick

Return to Productions Archive Lauriston Studio Betrayal Ran May 23, 2016 - May 28, 2016 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description Perhaps the greatest and most moving of all Pinter's plays. It concerns the devious workings of the human heart, love, guilt and passion. It begins with the embers of an adulterous relationship and traces the train of events through the previous years - the betrayal between wife and husband, mistress and lover and even between the rival men. The sweaty panic of the adulterer mixes thrillingly with the barely contained emotional violence of the situation. The play was famously based on Pinter's own affair with Joan Bakewell and has been constantly revived since its first production in 1978. Cast Emma - Jacqui Wheble Jerry - Malcolm Cooper Robert - Paul Wilson Waiter - Leon McKenna Reviews **** Review by Rick Bowen - Stagestruck YOU never feel totally comfortable watching a Harold Pinter play. The characters teeter on the brink of unpredictability, formula driven the work of this bespectacled genius most definitely isn’t. Leave your comfort zone at the theatre door, please. Jerry and Emma meet for a catch up at a pub and it soon becomes apparent they have a past, even if they keep a tight rein on their emotions. It could be two former work colleagues having a catch up, but it isn’t. The play takes us back in time nine years and we see far more passion then, with Jerry behaving like an infatuated schoolboy towards Emma, worshipping her like a goddess. While the pace of Betrayal is positively forensic at times, it is an engrossing, intriguing and grown up piece of theatre featuring some fabulous, witty and insightful lines from a master playwright. I’ve always been attracted to the work of artists who refuse to bow to convention and it goes without saying Pinter was a true enigma. For me, this is Jacqueline Wheble’s best performance to date at the Garrick, breezing across the stage with supreme confidence as Emma. She and Malcolm Cooper, who plays Jerry are really good together and very, very believable. Paul Wilson, an actor I rate very highly, gives his reputation yet another major boost as Emma’s hubby, Robert. This is a major achievement for all concerned, including the production’s director, Richard Sails. * Until May 28. The box office is on 0161 928 1677. Star rating – **** *** Review by Julia Taylor THE Lauriston Studio at Altrincham Garrick present the Harold Pinter classic, Betrayal, for their last play of the season. It is aptly named for it illustrates three kinds of betrayal. That of husband and wife, lover and mistress and two best friends and there are interesting duologues between each of these pairs. Pinter craftily makes the action begin two years after the end of an affair and takes us gradually backwards to its titillating start seven years beforehand. A screen with dates establishes the chronological order. An excellent twosome scene takes place in 1973 when Jacqui Wheble's Emma confesses to her husband, Robert (Paul Wilson) that she has been having an affair with his best friend Jerry (Malcolm Cooper) since 1968. Jacqui and Paul are real life partners which might have helped this difficult scene to run smoothly. It is not until that point that Robert, an adulterer himself, has any idea that his wife spends passionate afternoons with Jerry, The men remain disturbingly close despite the affair. The cast interact well and show mastery of the Pinter pause but the pace is just a fraction slow. Jacqui's Emma masters the work/home balance, yet remains attractive to men. After Jerry falls for her you can feel their sexual chemistry and yet, at times they seem set in their ways. Malcolm Cooper's facial expressions are telling as he indicates Jerry's fear of being found out. Until Saturday, May 28 For tickets, telephone 0161 928 1677 or book online at altrinchamgarrick.co.uk. Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production All the little Lights The Studio 2023/2024 Season - A Series of All Female Plays. Ran Apr 23, 2024 - Apr 28, 2024 Age guidance 14+ Venue Studio Running time TBC Tickets Price Range £12 - £14 Description “I know you want what everyone else wants. A family. A home. But you’ll never have it. Cos of what’s inside you.” In a world where nobody wants you, what would you do to survive? Joanne and Lisa were like sisters. Then Lisa left. Now they're back together for one last birthday party by the railway tracks. But can they salvage their friendship, or will ghosts from the past haunt them forever? Poignant, moving and darkly funny, All the Little Lights is the searing story of young girls slipping through the cracks in society, desperately searching for friendship, family and themselves. Reviews Rick Bowen from StageStruck - 4 Stars THE first thing I have to say about this play, the emotional equivalent of being hit by a train, is don’t be fooled by its cosy sounding title, with images of suburban cosiness. It couldn’t be further from the truth in Jane Upton’s remarkable piece of writing that’s both funny and painfully evocative. Joanne and Lisa, who had an almost sisterly bond until they separated, ache for a better life even though the spectre of sexual exxploitation lurks in the background and threatens to crush their dreams. Amy, described as being like a baby by the formidable and feisty Joanne is simply looking for somewhere to belong.. As the three girls there’s an unsettling authenticity to their performances with Georgina Brame, Natalia Leaper and Isabel Stuart-Cole deserving a far bigger audience than the one that trickled into the Lauriston on opening night. While Upton’s play is a very difficult watch in places, theatre is at its best when it gives a voice to the voiceless and humanises issues like child abuse. Director Meg Brassington, so, so funny in the lead role in the Garrick’s production of the Vicar of Dibley, proves she’s equally at home with the serious stuff and I also liked her very convincing litter strewn set which formed the girls’ hillside sanctuary. It was a brave decision for the Garrick to stage such a challenging play which deserves to do very brisk business at its box office. Star rating **** Gallery Trailer Trigger Warning This production contains extremely strong adult language and talks about sexual exploitation and the abuse of minors.
