From a shadowy raptor on the loose to baby dinos you can feed (carefully!), every twist in the plot brings gasps, giggles, and the occasional jump-scare from the youngest audience members. Previous Next Jim O'Gara Jim was a delightful and highly skilled actor who played many leading roles in the 1980s and 90s, especially in Alan Aykbourn plays such as Bedroom Farce and Season's Greetings . These were often directed by Alan Rothwell, a professional director who himself was well known for playing David Barlow in the early years of Coronation Street . Jim's natural and easy style of acting was highly appreciated by audiences, and his comic timing and hilarious facial expressions were priceless. Back to In Memoriam page

Previous Next Stephen Wardale Stephen was the Garrick's longest-serving supporter, having been a member for over 75 years at the time of his death. He was a great patron and benefactor. His aunt and uncle were founding members, and it was they who took him to see his first play : George Bernard Shaw's The Devil's Disciple . That was performed in 1922 at the Dunham Road Unitarian Chapel, the Garrick's former home. Stephen remembered the current theatre being built in 1932, and in the late 1960s he became a long-serving Front of House manager. He was aware of the refurbishment plans put forward in 1998 and knew that Lottery Funding had been obtained, but unfortunately didn't live long enough to see the theatre as it is today. Previous Next Stella Sails (née Doyle) Stella was a wonderfully versatile actress, first performing at the Garrick in 1975 in Who killed Santa Claus . Her other credits include After the Fall by Arthur Miller, Twelfth Night (playing Maria), A Man for All Seasons , Fifteen Streets , Move Over Mrs Markham , and The Winslow Boy . She also appeared with the Garrick company at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1982. He embarks on a case that will last several years and becomes the source of much attention from the press and public with some admiring Winslow's perseverance and others perplexed by his unwillingness to drop what they see as a trivial matter, especially given what is brewing in Europe. Set in the years leading up to the First World War, the play has a familiar English drawing room feel. There is a sense of events taking place during a brighter, better time that exists no longer, and this is echoed in the light, airy set - but it is also an utterly compelling piece of theatre. What does make an impression when watching The Winslow Boy is the way his family fight like tigers to clear his name. Particularly his father, Arthur, whose appetite for the struggle remains undiminished even when his health starts failing him. There are some touching scenes between Ronnie and his dad, a character hopelessly set in his ways and these are perfectly played by Daniel Shaw and David Reynolds in Altrincham Garrick's latest production. David has the sort of voice I could listen to for hours and they look and sound like a real father and son. The Winslow Boy tells an uplifting story at a sedate pace and there are some wonderful lines in Rattigan's thoughtful and at times witty script. In Catherine Winslow, Ronnie's sister, the writer gives us a woman who dares to speak her mind in an age where many were still subservient to the men in their life. For me, this is Ali Davenport's best performance to date on the Garrick stage and Catherine memorably clashes with cold fish of a lawyer Sir Robert Morton, played by Martin Oldfield. I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that this man is incapable of a bad performance. The Winslow Boy is based on a true story which ends far more sadly than this hugely enjoyable play. Previous Next Don Poole A Timperley lad and plumber by trade, Don was a wonderful comedy performer who took part in over 50 productions in a 30-year career. His first roles on stage, in 1967, were as Reverend Mercer in When We Are Married and as a character in Toad of Toad Hall. He is best remembered for playing the Dame in pantomime, and as the Chairman and Master of Ceremonies in the theatre's popular Old Time Music Halls in the 1970s and 80s. He played the Dame a total of eight times, the first being in Jack and the Beanstalk in 1970 and the last as Widow Twankey (whom he played three times) in Aladdin in 1998 before hanging up his frocks. He occasionally took on other roles in the pantomime such as Ugly Sister Tuti in Cinderella in 1997. Don was Chairman of the Music Hall seven times from 1976-85, and is shown in this photograph in his Music Hall 'uniform'. On one memorable occasion he helped organise the evacuation of the theatre, gavel in hand, when a curtain started smouldering because it was too close to a lamp. He also took part in many other productions, mostly but not exclusively comedies, such as The Owl and the Pussycat , The Ritz , Oh! What a Lovely War , Last Tango in Whitby , Run for Your Wife , and Oliver! (playing Mr Sowerberry) in 1997. Don was also a well-known stand-up comedian and, in the early 1990s, he helped organise 'Comedy Clubs in the Bar' as part of the STAGE Appeal to renovate the theatre. Unsurprisingly they were always packed out. He also appeared on television (his credits including Coronation Street , Crown Court , The Mallons , and Brideshead Revisited ) and onstage at the Royal Exchange. In addition he was an accomplished film-maker, casting many Garrick actors of his era. As well as all this, Don was thoroughly likeable and sociable and was wonderful company in the bar with his jokes and stories. A true Garrick character. Back to In Memoriam page

Previous Next Val Bacon Val Bacon was a regular performer with a number of local dramatic societies, including Urmston Musical Theatre, Sale Nomads, Edge Fold Players, All Saints and Salford Operatic. In her later years she concentrated all her attention to the Garrick, and was an acting member for over a decade from the late 1990s. Val also worked as an ASM, and helped out Front of House. Val's TV credits include Coronation Street , Emmerdale and Linda Green (with Lisa Tarbuck). She also appeared in television advertisements (for example Hotter Shoes and Sheerings Holidays. Previous Next Pat Williamson Pat was a Headmistress at a large infant school in Manchester who joined the Garrick in 1983. Remembered for her warm and friendly personality, she was a hugely talented actress playing a wide variety of roles on the Garrick stage, starting with Miriam in Outside Edge and finishing with Lady Tressilian in Towards Zero in 2019. In comedic roles, which she excelled at, she was often cast as "a batty old lady" (her words) such as Miss Skillen in See How They Run , Miss Whitchurch in The Happiest Days of Your Life , the inebriated Mrs McGee in Corpse , Mrs Verrinder-Gedge in Glorious and, of course, Letticia Cropley in The Vicar of Dibley . She also took on many serious roles, such as Mrs Birling in An Inspector Calls , George in The Killing of Sister George , Hesther Salomon in Equus , Madge in The Dresser , and Marion Bishop in Nightmare (for which she won a NODA Best Actress award). In pantomime, she played the Wicked Witch in Mother Goose and an air-guitar playing Fairy Godmother in Cinderella . Off stage, she freely gave her time volunteering as a Front of House usher and sewing on sequins in wardrobe, and she never missed a social event. She was also involved with Cheadle Players, and the Altrincham Little Theatre for whom she won the GMDF Best Actress award playing in Stevie and she took part in a radio play on Radio Manchester. Previous Next Peter Coatman Peter was an outstanding character actor, who joined the theatre in the 1960's. In his later years his style of acting led to him playing many vicars, doctors and lawyers, but in fact he had a far wider repertoire. He was also an excellent set designer. A true gentleman, Peter was a long-time servant of the Garrick on the Executive Committee during the 1980s and 90's, and was heavily involved in the discussions and decisions regarding the refurbishment of the theatre that took place in 1999. I never thought I’d feel the same deep seated warmth for these characters again. But in Charlie Tomlinson’s flawless and fabulous stage production I felt it - in spades. As Blackadder, Steven Finney treats us a one man comedy masterclass and displays a sense of timing that is simply sublime. He can also make you laugh when he doesn’t actually say anything and while there are echoes of Atkinson, he’s more than succeeded in putting his individual stamp on this classic part. Michael Gallagher is equally memorable as his sidekick and the butt of his jokes, Baldrick. There’s a natural rapport between the two of them. Rehearsals must have been a hoot. In this particular outing, Blackadder and Baldrick are fighting for King and country in the First World War. They’re trying to keep their spirits up as they’re waiting for the next offensive, “the big push,” to begin. While Blackadder is unashamedly cynical about the War and what he sees as a senseless loss of life, the scriptwriters, Richard Curtis, Ben Elton, John Lloyd and Rowan Atkinson, never cross into irreverence and maintain the respectful tone needed when tackling a subject as difficult as this one. If their script was a drink it would definitely be vintage champagne and not a word is wasted by a cast that includes a superb Hugh Everett performance as the unbelievably dense Lieutenant The Honourable George Colthurst St Barleigh. This production made me laugh until my sides ached but when the ending came the tears were in my eyes. And I, as a lifelong fan of this TV classic, knew what was coming. Star Rating ★★★★★ Review by Max Eden for North West End If there has ever been a time to revisit the Classic BBC television series; Blackadder, it would be this week - with this Sunday marking the centenary of the end of the First World War and the First World War being very much in the forefront of people’s minds. So, when I had the opportunity to see the theatre production of Blackadder Goes Forth at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse this week, I jumped at the chance. First things first, this production is anything but amateur, it’s slick, funny and professional throughout. The script written by Richard Curtis, Rowan Atkinson, Ben Elton and John Lloyd’s is as razor sharp as it was when it first aired with hilarious set ups and gags throughout and has been cleverly adapted for the stage. As with most productions; the cast can make or break a show like this and in this case; it’s the cast who makes this show as powerful as it is. The lead; Captain Blackadder is played by Steve Finney who has embraced the mannerisms and style of Rowan Atkinson down to the very last detail, it’s no surprise when you realise he’s played Blackadder before in 2015 because he’s just too good not too. Finney is joined by a stellar cast including the hilarious Michael Gallagher who plays Baldrick and David Beddy who plays General Sir Anthony; both of which are wickedly funny with impeccable timing and delivery throughout. The entire cast deserve high praise for this production and I couldn’t fault any of them for what was a magnificent performance. Directed by Charlie Tomlinson who also plays Field Marshal Haig; you are immediately transported back to the trenches of WW1 and thanks to an impressive set design which features full sized trenches and dorms which are West End quality sets. This show is wickedly funny throughout until the end, but nothing can prepare you for that final scene which so cleverly puts the men who fought the war right in the forefront of your mind; the choices they had to make and the sacrifice they did in order for us to live today. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room tonight as poppies fell from above once the cast had gone ‘over the top’. A wonderful production with a stellar cast and witty script which poignantly remembered the fallen just when we weren’t expecting it. Verdict: Anything but Amateur, this is magnificent! All valid tickets must be retained by the Customer for the duration of the Event and made available for inspection on request by a member of Staff. Inability to produce a valid Ticket may lead to expulsion from the Venue. 3.3 It is the Customer’s responsibility to contact The Theatre if a Ticket is lost, damaged or destroyed. Duplicate Tickets may be issued at the discretion of The Theatre (on the evening of the performance only). In such instances photographic identification and proof of address may be requested. 3.4 The Customer is responsible for ensuring that the information on their Ticket is correct. Customers are encouraged to bring any error to the attention of The Theatre as soon as possible. 3.5 The Theatre will use reasonable endeavours to contact Customers if an Event is cancelled/postponed. It is the Customer’s responsibility to check for changes to the Event prior to attending. 3.6 All children regardless of age require a Ticket. 4 Terms of Admittance 4.1 The Theatre reserves the right to refuse admission to a Customer or to eject them from the Venue at any point during an event if in The Theatre’s reasonable opinion a Customer’s behaviour is not suitable for the Event. No Ticket refunds will be available is such instances. Such behaviour includes, but is not limited to, a Customer: 4.1.1 acting in an aggressive manner; 4.1.2 being abusive to, or compromising the safety of any member of Staff, Promoters’ representatives, performer or other Customer; 4.1.3 distracting other Customers from enjoying the Event. 4.1.4 being under the influence of alcohol or drugs; 4.1.5 any breach of these Conditions or statutory law. 4.2 Customers are not allowed to smoke or use e-cigarettes at the Venue. 4.3 Whist reasonable efforts shall be made by The Theatre to give warnings to Customers regarding special effects it is the responsibility of each individual to seek further information or medical advice. 4.4 Mobile phones and any other electronic equipment (e.g. cameras) must be switched off during the Event and no unauthorised recording equipment is allowed in the Venue. Any unauthorised recordings or photographs may be confiscated and destroyed. Neither The Theatre nor the Promoter will be responsible for any loss sustained. 5 Cancellation 5.1 No refunds are available unless the Event is cancelled, postponed or if the Event is materially changed. A material change in the context of these Conditions is a change which, in The Theatre’s reasonable opinion, makes the Event materially different from that booked by a Customer. A cast change, use of understudies and alteration of running time are not considered a material change. 5.2 Exchanges are only permitted at the discretion of the theatre manager and due to exceptional circumstances. If so agreed, the exchange must be for the same event and no later than 5 days before the performance takes place. Exchanges are subject to a £1.00 per ticket administration charge. 5.3 If an Event is cancelled Customers will be refunded the face value of the Ticket. The Theatre will endeavour to refund any monies by the same means as it was received. 5.4 If an Event is postponed or rescheduled the Customer will be offered alternative Tickets. If the alternative Ticket is cheaper the Customer shall be reimbursed the difference. Conversely, if the alternative Ticket is more expensive the Customer shall pay the difference. If the Customer does not wish to take up the offer of an alternative Ticket then they shall be refunded the face value of the Ticket for the cancelled Event. 6 Delivery 6.1 If a Customer chooses to receive their Ticket by post or via the print-at-home facility then it is their responsibility to contact The Theatre if no ticket is received within 7 days of booking. If The Theatre is not notified of the non-receipt of the Ticket then no refund, alternative Ticket or duplicate Ticket shall be offered. 6.2 Tickets shall be posted to the Customer by second class post within 48 hours of the booking being made. The Theatre will not accept any liability for any Tickets mislaid or lost by Royal Mail. 6.3 A delivery fee of £1 per transaction shall be applied in addition to the Ticket price in respect of all Tickets sent from the Box Office to a UK address. For deliveries outside of the UK, Customers are encouraged to contact the Box Office to make additional arrangements. 6.4 Any Tickets booked 7 days or less before the Event is scheduled to take place must collect their Tickets from The Theatre Box Office. 6.5 When collecting Tickets from The Theatre Box Office Customers may be required to provide photographic identification and proof of address. 7 Consents and Prohibitions 7.1 The resale of Tickets is prohibited. The Theatre takes no responsibility for the validity of Tickets purchased through unauthorised facilities. 7.2 By purchasing a Ticket, Customers are deemed to consent to being filmed or photographed where the event or performance is being filmed or photographs taken. 8 Liability 8.1 The Theatre shall not be responsible for any injury to the Customer or loss, theft or damage of Customer’s belongings, other than that caused as a direct result of negligence or other breach of statutory duty. 8.2 Subject to clause 8.1, The Theatre’s total liability to the Customer, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, arising under or in connection with the Conditions shall be limited to the total amount paid for Tickets. 8.3 Nothing in clause 8 excludes or limits liability for death, personal injury or fraud. 8.4 Neither party shall be in breach of this Contract nor liable for delay in performing, or failure to perform, any of its obligations under this Contract if such delay or failure result from events, circumstances or causes beyond its reasonable control, such as power or equipment failure. 8.5 Arrangements, including but not limited to, travel and accommodation, are booked at the Customer’s risk and The Theatre shall not be liable for any additional costs associated with the cancellation of the Event. 9 Data Protection 9.1 The Theatre may use your personal information together with other information for providing services marketing administration and training. We may also keep your information for a reasonable period in order to contact you about our services. Although you may decide by giving us notice in writing at any time that you no longer wish to receive marketing materials. Previous Next Stevie Salem (née Holt) Stevie was a firm Garrick audience favourite for over 20 years, appearing in over thirty shows in a leading role. Her first play at the theatre was in Birds on a Wing , in 1972. Her other main credits include Crown Matrimonial , Private Lives , Play it Again Sam , After the Ball , Blithe Spirit (when she played Elvira), California Suite , Having a Ball , A Taste of Honey , See How They Run (in which she played Penelope Toop), and Steel Magnolias . Her final performance on the Garrick stage was in Last Tango in Whitby in 1993. Stevie also appeared in musicals such as Marie and Annie , as well as several Old Time Music Halls. Previous Next Gareth Gwenlan Gareth was born in Wales and trained as an actor and teacher at Drama School after National Service. He started out as a theatre director in York and Derby, then moved to the Altrincham Garrick as Artistic Director for the 1964/65 season. Although only at the Garrick for that one season, what a season he chose. It included The Rattle of a Simple Man , An Ideal Husband , A Man for All Seasons , The Boyfriend , plus a Pantomime that nearly broke the bank. In 1965, he left the Garrick to join the BBC, for what he described in his memoir as "an extra 10 bob". At the BBC, Gareth became a well-known producer responsible for such shows as Only Fools and Horses , Butterflies , To the Manor Born , The Green Green Grass , and The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin . Between 1983 and 1990, he became Head of BBC Comedy, commissioning such iconic shows as Blackadder , One Foot in the Grave , Bread , and Birds of a Feather. He also received 2 BAFTAs. A true story based on a group of WI members in Yorkshire who were the originators of the nude charity calendar idea in the mid 1990’s, this daring idea has been copied many times since, but some would say never bettered. The Calendar Girls film grossed more than £60m at the box office worldwide, while the play – which Firth adapted from his film script – has taken more than £21m in ticket sales alone. Certainly, as far as the Altrincham Garrick’s presentation of this play is concerned, it’s a careful mixture of nimble acting skills and canny casting in this story which, while it deals with the dreaded big “C”, is humorous and ultimately uplifting. At the centre of the strong ensemble cast is Beverley Stuart-Cole, who relishes her role as Chris and drives the calendar project with head girl levels of determination. Beverley exceled in her WI conference speech at the beginning of Act 2, which received a heart-warming and well deserved applause from the audience. The cast of game actresses worked well as a unit and generated a natural rapport with delightful performances all round radiating a sense of warmth. Annie - the recent widow played by Janet Slade - encourages the ladies to think outside their frocks! Her subtle struggle to remain upbeat through her grief was beautifully portrayed which I imagine could easily be lost amongst Firth's loftier characters and comic one liners, but Janet kept us all in line reminding us where the heart of this play truly lies. The photography shoot / nude scene was handled with comic bravado, portrayed not too dissimilar to a silent comedy routine, milking any discomfort the audience (or even the cast) may have about such unseemly revelations! This, and rightly so, was the play's highlight, the enactment was fulfilling and delivered a mix of emotions from fear to accomplishment, laughter to surprise, undoubtedly the peak to the play as I’m sure was intended during its original creation. Congratulations to all on a profound kick off to your 2012/13 season! He took part in many musicals including one of the Garrick's smash hit productions of La Cage Aux Folles as George, the night club owner. About the Theatre History of the Garrick In Memoriam: Past Members of the Garrick Productions Archive The Garrick Theatre Established in 1914, The Altrincham Garrick Society aims to present Drama, Comedy, Musicals and Pantomime – and is happy to consider presenting other forms of the dramatic arts ! The Playhouse was built through membership donations in 1932 – its main auditorium seats 401 and is typically in use throughout September to July. A Garrick Academy of the Performing Arts runs term-time Saturday classes for children aged 5 to 18, as well as a week-long Summer School in August. The Society typically produces 13 main stage productions per year, including the Pantomime and the annual GAPA (Youth Academy) production. The Playhouse also hosts many shows from professional individuals and professional production companies. In addition, the Garrick Picturehouse comprises a large screen, which is used to show cinema films and “as-live” recordings of professionally-staged productions. Finally, the Studio is a 49-seat venue at the back of the building, in which more experimental and more intimate theatre is staged. The theatre is staffed and managed mainly by volunteers, with a small number of employees in specific areas (for example the Artistic Director and Operations Director, Box Office, Accounting, Maintenance and more). The theatre is a registered charity, so the management of the theatre finances and legal issues is governed by a Board of Trustees. Together this makes up the Garrick Theatre family. The Garrick Studio If you are looking for something more exciting to tickle your theatrical taste buds, why not throw caution to the wind and visit our smaller theatre: The Studio. The Studio is perfect for that feeling of being part of the action and where you can experience the intimacy of the story telling. Here you can get up close and personal with the actors as they wow you with their performances. We do not allow touching or the feeding of our actors, however, as some of them have been known to bite!
