This smash hit show shares the incredible real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives with open hearts. Experience this joyous story and soaring music as spirited locals and global passengers come together to forge friendships that will stay with them forever. The first female American Airlines captain, the quick-thinking town mayor, the mother of a New York firefighter and the eager local news reporter are among the many real characters caught at the start of the moment that changed the course of history and whose stories became a true celebration of hope, humanity and unity. Winner of four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical and the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical on Broadway, now experience this new production at Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, 25 Years on from the events of 9/11. Directed by Joseph Meighan. Commemorative Performance: Friday 11th September at 8pm "Tonight we honour what was lost. But we also commemorate what we have found." The performance of COME FROM AWAY on Friday 11th September marks the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. At this performance, we will have a ten-minute break after the bows, and then the Cast and Creative Team will return to the stage for a post show Q&A and discussion. All ticket holders for this performance are welcome to stay for this special event. Come From Away - Pay It Forward Campaign In the true spirit of Gander, we want the generosity on stage to extend far beyond the curtain call. Inspired by the way an entire town opened its arms to strangers; we are running our own "Pay It Forward" initiative throughout the run. We invite you, our audience, to bring donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries, and essentials to leave in our foyer collection points. All donations will go directly to support local food banks (Trafford North and Trafford South) across our community. It is a simple way for us to honour the legacy of Gander and Come From Away by turning empathy into direct, local action. We will be collecting items in our foyer during the run of Come From Away, and in particular, we are in need of: Shampoo / Body wash / Deodorant / Sanitary Towels / Toilet Roll / Toothpaste / Tinned Meats / Sugar / Tinned Vegetables / Noodles / Coffee / Cordial If you wish to donate, simply bring one of the above items (or several) to the Theatre when you visit to see our production of Come From Away. We go with the lads on their increasingly disastrous stag night followed the next day by a chaotic wedding when half the guests, including the priest conducting the wedding, are suffering from blinding hangovers. However, that didn't stop me perching on the edge of my seat more than once, feeling as trapped as poor old Bella Manningham, a woman at her wit's end. They say you only really know someone when you live with them. But for this tormented individual, her husband Jack, who takes an almost perverted pleasure in humiliating her, has become a closed book. No wonder Bella is going out of her mind, a virtual prisoner in a house which is as cosy as your average crypt. It's not only the house that has a past. It's always exciting to see newcomers on the Garrick stage and after her performance as Bella Parissa Zamanpour should be swamped with offers of future work. Attractive and elegant, hers is as an amateur performance only in name. Supremely convincing, you'll find yourself desperate for her to get one over on the horrendous Jack (Jonathan Black). But this is 1897, when many women still deferred to their husbands. Mark Butt is a delight as Rough, a character with a very unique outlook on life who is very easy to warm to. His return to this theatre is very welcome, however, I can't really go into detail about his character's role in the plot. Vicky Siddle impressed me when she appeared in another amateur production and does so again as the flirty maid Nancy, teasing Jack mercilessly. Director Ros Greenwood ensures the tension bubbles along beautifully and I hope the full house on Monday night is repeated more than once throughout the run. A spooky classic. Star rating ★★★★ Review by Julia Taylor for Sale and Altrincham Messenger Cast excels in eeris psychological thriller The dank, January evening when Altrincham Garrick Playhouse present Gaslight, is reflected by the sombre stage illuminated by flickering gaslights. Director, Ros Greenwood, has adopted a unique approach by creating a constantly nightmarish feeling which keeps the audience in silent awe. The eerie atmosphere in Jack Manningham?s Victorian psychological thriller is captured throughout. It's about a man whose mental cruelty towards his wife, drives her to the point of madness. The play's success depends not only on the superb acting by all the cast, but also on lighting and sound effects provided by Geoff Scullard, Natasha Klein, Ros Greenwood and James Merrington. The arch-villain is Jonathan Black?s Jack Manningham. He conveys well a man who systematically terrorises his wife by inferring she is responsible for the disappearance of objects. Rare acts of kindness 'such as a trip to the theatre' are cancelled when he calls her half-witted. Before Jack's true motive is revealed, he has dalliances with the maid, a flirtatious Vicky Siddle. Parissa Zamanpour is outstanding as his downtrodden wife, Bella. Every attempt to please her husband is rebuffed. Parissa's facial expressions convey Bella's feelings perfectly. Enter Mark Butt's Inspector Rough. His common sense and sanity add fresh air as he unearths Jack's criminal past. In a tense scene, his Inspector Rough and Jonathan's Jack Cunningham confront one another like rutting stags. Only at the end do we see the light. I find myself drawn to them and I want to be just like them. So it is with Hector, the avuncular schoolmaster in The History Boys. What a pity then, he has to spoil it all by taking the concept of hands on teaching one step too far. This endearing and enigmatic character has to be one of Alan Bennett?s most captivating creations and Nick Sample gives a performance to remember in Altrincham Garrick?s outstanding production of a theatrical masterpiece. Mark Dawson as his colleague Irwin is the chalk to Hector's cheese, a young teacher who is happy to turn out academic clones to keep the school's head smiling. That contradiction forms the premise of this remarkable piece of writing - should education be about passing exams or should it produce individuals who can think for themselves and bring something different to society? That may sound rather dry, but Bennett handles it with his trademark wit and eloquence. In fact, some of the lines in this play are verbal gold, so brilliant they make you shudder. While the performances of Sample and Dawson are worth the ticket money on their own, the young actors who play their pupils more than contribute to a very special evening in the theatre. What a pity I don?t have the space to name them all. Grace Smith Sale & Altrincham Messenger 's review by Rick Bowen Top marks for thought-provoking play WHETHER you've attended a strict Catholic convent school or not, or you simply remember what it was like to be young with an insatiable thirst for rebellion, you'll really enjoy Once A Catholic. It's a well crafted and beautifully observed piece of writing that recalls the fire and brimstone theology that was one a hallmark of the church. At this particular school, the nuns, Hitlers in habits, want to control every aspect of the girls behaviour - from the thoughts in their head to the type of knickers they wear. But the play, currently being performed at Altrincham Garrick, also makes the serious point that keeping young people in the dark makes them ill-equipped to cope in the big bad world beyond the school gates. One girl, for instance, receives the mother of all reprimands when she "dares" to ask one of the nuns about the facts of life. Alan Rothwell's production is perfectly paced and although the play is quite long - it's curtain down at 10.10pm - my attention didn't wander one iota. All the cast convince, and when the nuns address the audience, you sit up and take notice. Slouching will definitely not be tolerated! This is one of those pieces that requires a strong ensemble cast and Rothwell has certainly got that, because everyone on stage convinces. They all make full use of Mary O'Malley's believable and thoughtful script. A play with humour, a heart and a brain, 'Once A Catholic' is definitely not to be missed. And if you turn up late to the Garrick, make sure you have a note from your mum. Star Rating ★★★★ M.E.N.'s Review by Julia Taylor SCHOOLS in the fifties were much stricter than today, But Catholic girls' schools were probably the toughest of the lot. The Garrick's production of Mary O'Malley's play, Once A Catholic, takes you to the heart of one of these institutions - The Convent of our Lady of Fatima, Grammar School for Girls. The Catholic teenagers would much rather think about Elvis and boys than learn their catechisms. Their teachers instill in them that it is wrong to associate with the opposite sex. Indeed, they accuse the girls of so many petty misdemeanours that it is almost a sin to breathe. Some of the nuns are practically sadistic in their insistence on discipline and decorum. But this is a comedy. Girls will be girls and a bunch of lively fifth formers whose banter provides a laugh a minute don't let a few nuns inhibit their fun. Director, Alan Rothwell, tells the story in well-grouped small scenes. So, we go from the chapel to the classroom and to the home of protestant teddy boy, Derek, in film-like succession. Derek (Anthony Morris) seduces schoolgirl Mary Mooney (Rosi Hunter) after enticing her to watch his new-fangled TV. Innocent Mary is overcome with remorse and one of the funniest scenes is when she confesses her sin to Father Mullarkey (John Westbrook) whilst he eats sausages. Rosi, who hopes to become a professional actress, shows her future promise when her Mary fumbles to find the words to expressive the enormity of her crime. For not only has she committed an abominable offence, she has done it with her friend's boyfriend. Three groups of characters stand out. They are the three leading schoolgirls, three strict nuns and four men. They all get into the skin of their characters, interact well and make us laugh by just being who they are. There is one thing that we know won?t happen even to the girl who is engaged to a non-Catholic they won't leave the church. As the saying goes 'Once a Catholic, always a Catholic'. Musical Director - PETER ENGLAND Choreographer - ALEXANDRA HOWARTH REVIEW by Julia Taylor for Messenger 'A Snow White for children at the Garrick' SNOW WHITE, written and directed by Alan Clements, is one of the best Garrick pantos I have seen. Well, it has to be really, because your reviewer sitting quietly two rows from the front ended up almost becoming a star of the show. Singled out when I say I am from The Messenger, Phil Edwards as Dame Daffy Dumpling gets the audience to cheer me every time he comes on. Of course, the real star in the comedy department is Phil, himself, who along with Dan Ellis as Muddles, the court jester, has the kids shouting the house down.?Every time Muddles appears the kids shout ?water your Milly, the name of his pet plant, which magically grows each time they call. Ros Greenwood, a Garrick stalwart who I've enjoyed many times, excels as the ever so wicked Queen Belladonna. Dressed in black and silver, she says 'I hate children' with such venom, the boos nearly crack the walls. And that is the beauty of this show. It involves the kids all the time and they love it. What's more, it isn't too long for them. In her first panto lead, Christina Williams plays well the beautiful Cinderella-like Princess Snow White suffering at the hands of her wicked step mother, the Queen. The dwarves, all played by children, perform well. I asked Katey aged nine from 12th Altrincham brownies what she thought of the show. The pupil of Altrincham Church of England school, said: I like the dancing especially in the wood when Snow White is frozen. It is also funny... Star Rating ★★★★ ★ NORTH WEST END STAGE - REVIEW by Mark Dee It must be at least 20 years since I last set foot in the Garrick Theatre in Altrincham, and today the building is almost unrecognisable. It now looks and feels like a small-scale touring venue, but is better equipped than most, especially technically. I'm almost certain there wasn't a Studio Theatre last time I was there, and they certainly didn't have the LX and FX capacities that were on display yesterday in the main theatre. Needless to say I was suitably impressed. And now, after having watched my first show there in such a long time, I can, if I use this show as a benchmark, quite easily see why so many of the Garrick's actors and production staff are nominated for and receive so many awards. The show in question was Snow White; the Altrincham Garrick's pantomime, and what a splendid way to finish the year. With live music (unseen below the stage), an LX / FX plot to rival any professional show, a lovely set and some great acting, what was there not to enjoy about the show? Well, the answer to that question is, not a lot! In truth, it really was a very good and enjoyable show, but it was missing, to my mind at least, one ingredient - fabulous dance routines. Yes, I saw that you had a small chorus of youngsters who acted very well and moved their way through some of the numbers, I just felt that as I was sitting watching what was on every other level a very professionally produced show, it lacked a chorus of dancers who were capable of doing much more exciting and difficult routines. That being said, if the chorus girls on stage were capable of this, it begs the question as to why they didn't. Otherwise, this panto was pretty damn good. The star of the show last night was..... wait for it..... the costumes!! Well, no of course they weren't, but the costumes were unbelievably good. Does one of your members own a Costumiers?! I am not joking when I say that so far this season, on both professional and amateur stage, those were the best costumes I have encountered. And what was even more amazing was that they just kept on coming in an endless supply. I loved all the Dames outfits, and the stunning purple and silvers for the finale were magical. As you probably can imagine, over the years I have seen and acted in many pantomimes; far too many to even think about trying to count, and so I thought therefore that I had seen everything there was to see on that front. The Garrick's production yesterday proved me wrong - showing me that you can indeed show an old dog new tricks! Among other things, I have never before seen the song sheet voting done by asking the MD, nor have I ever witnessed a show where so many children are brought up on stage to participate in it, losing count around 80! And whilst we're on the subject of the song sheet, I don't ever remember hearing one which tells the audience the evil character in the panto {in this instance Snow White's step mother, Queen Belladonna} isn't really that bad! I won't give away the last trick up your sleeves, but I've never experienced that before either; although if I'd have looked up at the rig I might have had a clue! Queen Belladonna {Ros Greenwood} made the absolute most of her evil role. With great make-up and costume, she really enjoyed being evil and the audience enjoyed booing her. Her transformation into old crippled woman was superbly done. Phil Edwards as Dame Daffy Dumplings pitched his cheek and banter just right, working well with the audience, especially Christine! (Round of applause for Christine!!) The youngest member of the principals was Dan Ellis, playing Muddles. The way he reacted and interacted with both cast members and audience was unique. His style, slightly acerbic and slightly camp, suiting perhaps a Dame better, but too young and too energetic to be anything other than his present role. It took me a little time before I latched on to his wavelength but once I did, his cutting asides to the audience and his never keeping still not even for one second, actually worked in his favour. I am not going to mention all the cast, but I am going to say that the seven dwarfs; (quickly taking Spellcheck off!) Bizzy, Dizzy, Jizzy, Izzy, Quizzie, Tizzy and Whizzy {Finn McCarthy, Lara Cannon, Tom Langford, Mia Simpson, Isabelle Tiernan, Libby Tiernan and Lucy Potts} were great. A massive thumbs up to all of you! The directing was very solid by Alan Clements, and, opting most wisely for a very traditional family version of this well-known story, he managed to bring out the best in all the cast, finding some lovely moments between principals and / or chorus. Everyone worked so well together, and all were so obviously enjoying themselves, and this shone through. He even produced a truly brilliant UV routine, and the "If I Weren't In Pantomime" song and routine, using the older girl members of the chorus was inspired and excellent Snow White continues its run at Altrincham Garrick until 3 January, so there is still a little time to catch it and bring some festive cheer to the "after-the-25th-blues"! Looking at their 2016 season, I am feeling very excited. There are some really interesting productions on their way, and since this panto has set the bar already really quite high for me, I am now very much looking forward to watching their new year's offerings. John Henderson MP - David Reynolds Review by Rick Bowen for Stagestruck DAVID Beddy is a highly accomplished actor whose equally at home with both serious and comedic roles, and his portrayal of ambitious politician Philip Conway is a delight from start to finish. Pip as he's more affectionately known, has one eye on the to job. But he lacks the sort of ruthlessness that keeps the character eminently likeable in Eric Chappell's briliantly observed political comedy/farce. You get the distinct impression Pip's plans could unravel at any moment, which makes it impossible not to warm to an MP who is anything but a natural born orator. Give Beddy the chance to work alongside Martin Oldfield as Pip's personal bodyguard Higgs, a fully paid up member of the call it as he sees it brigade and Joanne Buxton as the seductive Vicky and you have the recipe for pure comedy gold. When it comes to Oldfield I firmly believe he doesn't have a bad performance in him and Joanne Buxton as Vicky expertly assumes a variety of different personas as she sweeps into Pip's hotel room. Who can forget Mark Edgar-Clarkson as Lionel Berryman MP, a serial lush with a very dubious sense of morality. Like me you probably know Eric Chappell more for his brilliant 70's sitcom Rising Damp featuring that giant of British comedy, Leonard Rossitter. But Mark Jephcott's perfectly paced production has certainly whetted my appetite when it comes to seeing more of his plays. Great fun - just what we need on these freezing late winter nights. Review by Julia Taylor for The Messenger Politics helps spice up bedroom farce at Altrincham Garrick BEDROOM farces often have more spice when there's a political element to them. An example is Eric Chappell's somewhat wordy comedy, Up and Coming, Altrincham Garrick Playhouse?s current production. It concerns the struggles of Deputy Prime Minister Pip Conway, an alcoholic with an eye on becoming PM. His weak spot is women. In that role, David Beddy is pursued by two former lover, Vicky and secretary, Lorna Fiske. Pip is, of course, married and such dalliances go against the grain for a man with political ambition. David?s face reflects all. Joanne Buxton's Vicky oozes sexiness as she lays not just herself but her motives bare. Rachel Perrin's Lorna is also besotted by Pip but her approach is totally different. One of the funniest scenes is when both ladies end up in bed, not with Pip but with the one-eyed Lionel Berryman, MP (charismatic Mark Edgar-Clarkson) causing the ever so Prime Ministeral David Reynolds with his sarcastic wit, to complain that the chandelier in his room below is rattling! It's lovely to see Garrick stalwarts such as Martin Oldfield as the amusing special branch officer, Higgs, and David Reynolds as the Rt Hon. John Henderson, MP, strutting the boards again so professionally along with newly returned Matthew Foster as the Rt Hon. George Reynolds MP.Thanks to the set designers Trevor McKie, Paula Keen and Mark Jephcott and their team the two roomed set has doors, through which the cast can appear and disappear or, where necessary, hide in their conference hotel. Star rating ★★★ 'Up & Coming' projecting the right image thanks to local firm Keyteq Local AV equipment hire firm Keyteq answered the call from the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse recently who needed a powerful projector to deliver their staging plans for their production of the political comedy farce ?Up & Coming? written by 'Rising Damp' author Eric Chappell. The play which opened this week and runs until Saturday 3rd March is set in a seaside location. The play's director Mark Jephcott explains, We like to surprise and entertain our audiences here at the Garrick with great set design and for this production of 'Up & Coming' we wanted to bring an idea of the plays location to life. To do this we needed to project giant images behind the main set construction which required an especially powerful projector. Thankfully, Keyteq were able to provide one at a budget we could afford and the result is spectacular. I'm sure that our audiences will love it. The play is a clever combination of a 'Yes Minister' style of comedy a smash TV hit at the time the play was written in 1989 and fast paced political farce. Philip Conway, Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the house is attending a party conference. Tipped to be the new party leader, his campaign for power is in danger of collapse. Visits from rivals, fellow conspirators and the all-too-attentive Vicky keep Philip on his toes. What's more, the world's press is in the lobby, there are threats of assassination and students are rioting outside the hotel. What exactly is it about seeing someone onstage or on television going through the most terrible hardships that makes us want to come back for more? Whatever it is, that quality is present in abundance in Noises Off. Noises Off is the story of a hapless English acting troupe who are touring a production of a farce called Nothing On. Expect lots of doors slamming, sexual dalliances, confusions, and, of course, plates of sardines. The encompassing story about the acting troupe is every bit as convoluted. The questions about the actors - who's in love with whom, who doesn't know what, why is everyone angry - are every bit as deep as the questions about the characters they portray. One of the funniest plays of the last thirty years. Garrick Production Rutherford and Son Ran Invalid Date - Jun 21, 2016 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description The Powerful Edwardian Northern Classic The play takes place in an industrial town in the north of England, a few years before the First World War. Mr. Rutherford is a widower, but his house is far from empty: also living there are his spinster sister and his three grown children, Janet, John and Richard, along with John's wife and their new baby. Rutherford owns a glass factory which was founded by his father, and which is one of the largest businesses in the town. The house has an oppressive atmosphere to it, partly because of the winter settling in, but more because of the fear that Rutherford inspires in his family. The business has gone through tough times recently he has had to take out a large loan from the bank and only someone with Rutherford's single-minded determination could have persevered as he has. In the face of the dominance that Rutherford wields over his family (no less than his factory), Janet has turned sullen and the two sons have become passive and ineffectual. But all three have hopes for the future. The play comes to a climax when he is confronted by a family mutiny which threatens to destroy the family as well as the factory. One wonders if it is a little slow moving and long for modern audiences ? the second half in itself lasts an hour and a half ? yet it reflects human nature well. The strained atmosphere in the Rutherford household is captured from the start in the gloomy home where industrialist Rutherford lives with his adult family. You can feel the pent up resentment for their tyrannical father whose only love is his glass making factory which he plans to leave to at least one of them, though none are interested. From his first grand entrance, Rutherford, played by a charismatic Richard Sails, dominates his family. He has educated them well but has never considered its effect upon them. One by one he lights the blue touch paper as each of his children explode verbally. There are powerful scenes when he confronts them. Richard, John and Janet played by Scott Ransome, John Keen and Ali Davenport give fine displays of acting as their true feelings for their father emerge. Outstanding performances also come from Mags Johnston as the grumpy aunt and David Baxendale as faithful factory manager, Martin. Parissa Zamanpour, who plays daughter-in-law, Mary, becomes the only one who can handle Rutherford and her efforts lead to the unusual ending. Star rating ★★★ Review by Rick Bowen for Stagestruck IMAGINE if you can, life as a sloth and that'll give you the idea of the pace of act one. Thankfully, this old school "right northern" play about a well-off family led by a factory owner splutters into life by act two. But the only way is up, to quote a line from a certain pop song. In act two we're treated to some memorable, at times impassioned confrontations between Rutherford, the patriarch from hell, and his two sons. John dreams of bettering himself for the sake of his infant son, while Richard is a man of the cloth, whose career aspirations are met with indifference by his indifferent dad, a man who eats, sleeps and breathes business. Richard Sails (Rutherford), John Keen (John) and Scott Ransome (Richard) play these scenes with the perfect amount of heat. However, the play's most sympathetic characters are Martin, who has served his master man and boy and Rutherford's feisty daughter Janet, a likeable 30 something terrified of being left on the shelf. David Baxendale and Ali Davenport make sure there's no escaping their anguish when they're so unjustly treated. I imagine this 100 year old was considered quite daring when it was first performed, as Rutherford's most worthy adversary comes from an unexpected source. But this play feels its age and I left the theatre wondering what a cast and a director as talented as these could have done with a play that has something to say to a 21st century audience. There are some magical comedy moments to enjoy but for me, there's a lack of pace in places. In saying that though, there's every reason to assume the tempo will increase as the run progresses. Now I know Rene the randy cafe owner is the main character, but the performance of the evening comes from Barry Spencer as the incurably vain Captain Alberto Bertorelli. His impersonation of a ranting and rabid Adolf Hitler is worth the ticket money on its own. Graham Simmonds as Rene demonstrates his gift for both verbal and visual comedy, ably assisted on one occasion by an inflatable Adolf. That scene is so funny you could easily crack a rib or two and there's an enjoyable chemistry between Graham and Angela Wetherill who plays his long suffering wIfe Edith, a woman who is desperate for the spark to return to her passion free marriage. Steve Bradshaw has designed an attractive set that serves as everything from a cafe interior to Rene and Edith's bedroom. It allows the production to flit from scene to scene with admirable smoothness. If you're a fan of the original TV series or a lover of old school comedy garnished with a little sauce, you'll love this. When she arrives to stay with her sister, Stella, in a crowded, boisterous corner of New Orleans, her delusions of grandeur bring her into conflict with Stella’s crude, brutish husband Stanley. Eventually their violent collision course causes Blanche’s fragile sense of identity to crumble, threatening to destroy her sanity and her one chance of happiness. Reviews Angela Kelly - North West End UK First performed on Broadway in 1947, Tennessee Williams ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ is a tragedy that highlights the inequalities of society in post war America. The play particularly shares the negative effects experienced by women during this time. Associated by many as one of the most significant of all American plays, it is certainly a brave step that the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse have undertaken in performing this epic tale. For those unfamiliar with the story, the play relays the story of Blanche Dubois (Kathryn Worthington) who arrives in New Orleans from Laurel, Mississippi having been given “a leave of absence” from her teaching role. She moves into her sister Stella’s apartment (Fiona Primrose) in the unbearable heat of New Orleans that she shares with Stella’s husband, the formidable Stanley Kowalski (Matthew Barnell). The antagonistic relationship between Blanche and Stanley from the moment she arrives in New Orleans provides the audience with a relationship that is uneasy to watch yet at the same time, extremely hard not to watch. Kathryn Worthington must be applauded for her excellent performance as Blanche Dubois, Stella’s estranged sister. Her portrayal of Blanche as a vulnerable woman from Mississippi, desperate to be loved and accepted by all was phenomenal. Her character crumbles as the play progresses and her fragility is heightened when finally, her sanity is questioned towards a dramatic ending. Worthington displays an almost “musical” southern states accent and her portrayal of Blanche's happy go lucky, innocence versus her deep-rooted insecurities was executed to perfection. Fiona Primrose, who portrayed the part of the dutiful wife Stella Kowalski, in some ways demonstrated the hopelessness of a woman in this era. Primrose displayed the internal struggle to fight the desperation to please her husband whilst battling with her need to provide Blanche with stability, love and understanding. Primrose demonstrated clearly to the audience that she was in turmoil between her need to protect Blanche and her duty to stay married to Stanley, even when violence ensued. Primrose’s representation of the character was exemplary. Matthew Barnell gave a solid performance as Stanley Kowalski and his unwavering masculinity, anger, pride and insistence on consistently being “top dog”. The poker scenes were well executed, and the drunken behaviour made it clear to the audience that whatever state Stanley Kowalski was in he always was to be “the man in charge.” With an abundance of stage presence, Barnell ensured Stanley was viewed as man hard to love, even by his friends at times. The set and staging worked very well in that it was consistent throughout. Impressive that even the bathroom which was a key reference point (and in reality, actually only showed the actors walking in and out of a door) demonstrated how well this was carried out. The various areas on stage were all meaningful to the entire play so it was a positive decision that they appeared to be fluidly utilised. The outside of the apartment of a noisy New Orleans and the inside of the apartment were closely connected which was key to the entire play. The deterioration of Blanche's mental health was also displayed by the clever use of jazz music on the set and Christine Mills on sound designed by director John Cunningham must be congratulated for this. The music continued during Blanche's eventual demise but eventually the sounds were almost entirely only experienced by Blanche. It did not go unnoticed that even the sound of the doorbell on set needed to be executed to perfection. A Streetcar named Desire is a story about types of love alongside fantasy versus the harsh reality of society. It is evident that Director John Cunningham has produced another fabulous piece of theatre and must be congratulated. It is no easy feat to produce such an iconic piece of theatre and A Streetcar Named Desire has given a much loved play a very positive nod. A play that is as thrilling to watch as it is uncomfortable, if you are a fan of this classic play by Tennessee Williams it is essential viewing for sure. An excellent production. Reviewed: 15th November 2021 Rating: ★★★★★ Rick Bowen - Stagestruck Director John Cunningham and his cast take the audience on an emotional journey in a captivating and at times touching and deeply moving production of this American classic. Unless you don’t have a heart, it’s impossible not to be affected by what unfolds on stage, in this absorbing piece of theatre from the pen of the great Tennessee Williams. Watching the play is draining at times, so goodness knows what performing it must be like for a tight knit and talented cast who make it their mission to make sure not a word of the wonderful Williams dialogue isn’t wasted. Blanche goes to stay with her sister, Stella, in the seedily seductive French quarter of New Orleans, where she finds her sibling living in a dingy two bedroom flat with her husband, Stanley. It’s a strange set up because the family has known the meaning of the word ‘affluence’ in the past and mystery surrounds just what happened to the former family home. Stanley quickly resents having Blanche around, with what he sees as her dubious past and irritating airs and graces. She compares the self-proclaimed king of his castle to an ape, branding him ‘common.’ But that really is an insult to our closest relatives. While I was naturally repulsed by the way Stanley treats his visitor and women in general, maybe I’m being a little too 21st century about it and ignoring the fact there were and surely still are many men like him who make the lives of those around them utterly miserable. Cunningham’s accomplished direction has drawn out fine performances from Matthew Banwell as Stanley and Kathryn Worthington and Fiona Primrose as Blanche and Stella, who evoke an authentic and endearing sisterly bond on stage. I also liked Paul Cuddy as Mitch, one of Stanley’s poker player pals who is by far the most gentlemanly of a motley crew. Cuddy ensures you feel for Mitch as he attempts to woo Blanche as she toys with his affection. Don’t miss this memorable production of an all American classic. Exceptional. Reviews WHEN Emily Leeland sings Piaf in this warts and all portrayal of the iconic French star my top lip quivered with emotion and my insides turned to jelly. More than once. Leeland is also every inch the diva in Pam Gems’ captivating play, not holding back when it comes to getting exactly what Piaf wants. Top of Piaf’s list are a career and a man, a man who can live up to her exacting demands. She gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘high maintenance.’ What makes Piaf’s story so captivating is it’s a story of success against all odds, how a young girl abandoned by her mother and raised in a brothel ended up having an audience with a US President. For me, there were echoes of Evita , reminding us that yes, it’s still possible to triumph in the face of adversity. You should feel very jealous of anyone lucky enough to have a ticket for this, because director Charlie Tomlinson and his creative team serve up a theatrical treat here. The production is just over two hours long and it feels like you’ve been in the theatre no more than around 20 minutes. But Leeland’s performance is by no means the only one to enjoy here. Olivia Riley is seriously funny as Piaf’s long suffering and loyal friend Tonie, with the two actresses establishing an effortless camaraderie from the start. The velvety-voiced Steven Finney is excellent as the plain speaking nightclub owner Louis Leplee and I can’t wait for the next production in which he has a bigger singing part. Sam Evans is sure to have you swooning as the silky smooth French singer Charles Aznavour. This is a production that simply must be experienced. A joy and a major triumph for all concerned. The Father , in this English translation by Christopher Hampton, was commissioned by the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal, Bath and premiered in October 2014. The production transferred to the Tricycle Theatre, London, in May 2015, and subsequently to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End. The Father was awarded the Moliere Award for Best Play and the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor. In 2020 a film version called The Father was released starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while Hopkins won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
