Alan Rothwell

Alan had a long and distinguished association with the Garrick for over 20 years as a professional director, starting in 1991 with A Small Family Business by Alan Ayckbourn.
He often directed comedies such as Dad's Army, 'Allo 'Allo, Yes Prime Minister, Noises Off and Calendar Girls. He was often associated with Ayckbourn plays such as Bedroom Farce and Seasons Greetings, and he also directed more serious plays such as Atonement and Once a Catholic.
Born in 1937 in Chadderton, Oldham, Alan started his acting career at age 10 in BBC Radio's Children Hour before going on to study at RADA.
Professional acting credits include The Archers, Coronation Street (in the very first episode as David Barlow in 1960), Brookside, Top Secret, Heartbeat and Doctors. He was also the host of BBC Children's education series Picture Box.
Alan was highly regarded at the Garrick, and he is remembered as a very approachable and likeable person who always brought the best out of his casts.
