< Back The Lieutenant of Inishmore ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 2 June 2014 Father Ted meets Reservoir Dogs - winner of the best comedy Olivier award This great play by Martin McDonagh won the Laurence Olivier award for Best Comedy in 2003 and was nominated for a Tony award in America. Wee Thomas was a friendly cat. Who knocked him over on a lonely road on the island of Inishmore, and was it an accident? His owner, handsome and dangerous Padriac, will want to know when he returns from across the border- he loves his cat more than life itself! Combining razor sharp, outrageously funny dialogue with a fast moving plot with twists and turns, this is a wild night at the theatre not to be missed. Martin McDonagh?s other award winning plays include The Pillowman, The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Cripple of Inishmaan recently seen in London starring Daniel Ratcliffe. His films include In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths. Set amid the troubles in Northern Ireland, it features blood and gore yet is also gut wrenchingly funny, it's a strange combination but if you can stomach torture and bloodied dead bodies, not to mention one being chopped up, the humour takes you by surprise and makes a nice contrast. The writer, Martin McDonagh, is a skilled playwright who has won many awards. He hasn't introduced violence for violence's sake but is quietly outlining a moral. It is that whatever section of the community violence comes from, it is never going to win any battles for the perpetrators. In this black comedy, the main perpetrator is INLA member Padraic who breaks off from torturing a Belfast drug pusher and rushes home to comfort his sick cat. This an indication of the humour to come although the violence erupts again when he discovers his 'wee Thomas' has died a sadistic death. The cat reveals a soft centre in this gangster. Alternating on different nights with Adam Gonet, I see Anthony Morris play the psychopathic Padraic in a way that makes you wonder what makes him tick. He is aided and abetted by his mol, the tough yet vulnerable Mairead played by Megan Johnstone. Still only 16 and handy with a gun, she longs to form her own terrorist splinter group. They have in common a morbid love of both violence and cats! The funniest characters are Padraic's father, Donny (Michael Gallagher) and Charlie Gallagher's Davey, Mairead's brother. They feel responsible for the death of wee Thomas which embroils them in some terrifying tangles. I especially love Charlie's Davey. He never fails to come up with an innocently amusing remark even when shaking with terror. In a fine piece of acting, his every mood is reflected in his face as well as his voice. The accents seem OK to me although the Irish friend who accompanies me is less convinced. Nevertheless, a great deal of skill goes into what appears simple particularly in the deadly scenes after the interval performed with perfect timing. You'll be surprised and perhaps a little guilty to discover you enjoy this play but enjoy it you will not least because it is directed by the Garrick's Executive Producer, Paul Kerryson. Star Rating ★★★★ ★ Review by The Messenger by Rick Bowen Classy black comedy at the Garrick Adam Gonet (Padraic) and Megan Johnstone (Mairead). Photo by Vishal Sharma Just when I thought risk taking was a thing of the past in commercially driven live theatre, Altrincham Garrick takes the brave decision to stage The Lieutenant of Inishmore. From a cat loving terrorist to a trigger happy teenage girl, all of human life is here in Martin McDonagh's classy black comedy. Adam Gonet expertly plays Padraic, a role he's sharing with Anthony Morris. He may be ruthless when it comes to dealing with his enemies but he's a big softie when it comes to his beloved pet cat. Adam is highly convincing when it comes to conveying both sides of this crazy character and for me, this is his best Garrick performance to date. Imagine his anger when Padraic discovers his moggy has come to harm and poor Davey (Charlie Gallagher) who looks like he's just stepped out of an Irish version of Wayne's World, ends up taking the blame. While the script contains strong language it is also extremely clever and laugh out loud funny in places and McDonagh frequently demonstrates a wonderful turn of phrase, even if the second act is far better than the first. Megan Johnstone is also very good value as the gun toting Miread, inextricably drawn to small town bad boy Padraic. She also has a lovely singing voice. Director Paul Kerryson obviously has a deep seated affection for this play and it shows in this highly watchable production. The Lieutenant of Inishmore might not be everyone's pint of Guinness, but this Irish masterpiece certainly makes for a very different night of theatre, rounded off with a brilliant twist that you definitely won't see coming. Enjoy. Star Rating ★★★★ NODA Review by Kevin Procter Should you have stopped by The Altrincham Garrick for this production, you may have appreciated a warning that a stronger stomach than usual may be required; The Lieutenant of Inishmore is Martin McDonagh's black (and blood-spattered) comedy directed by the recently appointed Chief Exec of the AG, Paul Kerryson. Paul certainly makes a stamp and shakes up the usual drama followers of the Garrick with his 'official' debut as director with the theatre, this show will have most definitely left an impression like a dollop of marmite; you'll either love this raw and gory contemporary drama/comedy or you may be one who's hoping for the return of the traditional slapstick, sexist farce. This title is not one which is particularly popular for am dram societies than it is with universities and fringe theatre groups (which I think is what makes it all the more appealing for the AG) - it's a modern creation which challenges and pushes boundaries, such a decision to venture into new ground is surely going to displease some folk but my view is it's never a bad thing to experiment and wake things up a bit, and ultimately, to ensure you present as wider variety of styles and genres as possible. As with the previous AG production (Oliver!), the casting committee have obviously struggled to come to a decision with who to choose for a role (though obviously not as extreme as previously) as the part of Padraic is shared by two actors and the one who is not 'on' as Padraic will take smaller roles in that particular performance, such a ruling seems slightly ludicrous for a production running for just one week and can only, surely, present more of a nuisance to the process than contributing something which works as an advantage to the production, but perhaps I'm missing something! On the performance I attended, Anthony Morris took the role of Padraic who delivered a tame psycho, I felt there was room to explore the maniac qualities of this individual to present the intimidating terrorist he is. The abattoir inspired set was an original approach to the shows design, steering away from the obvious description of the location given by the cast. Some of the Irish accents dropped somewhat which made the quick paced dialogue hard to catch but this is an incredibly tricky accent to replicate, an accent which is in fact renowned for being one of the most difficult to master which I do appreciate. Most impressive was Charlie Gallagher as Davey; the younger, dim brother who creates the chaos! A truly hilarious and alluring performance delivering the most natural and riveting of the bunch, a new face to the Garrick who is undoubtedly one to watch! Come the interval, I wasn't sure if this play was for me (on a personal level) but it wasn't until act two when the piece really shows its true colours, yes, it gets more gruesome but equally more comical. The balance of the script veers from violence to the ridiculous in an instant which, arguably, softens its vicious premise, however, we howl with laughter as members of the cast are brutally tortured then murdered and kittys are shot and slaughtered before our very eyes. One trait which is sure to make any creative team nervous is when a play requires a living cat to appear on stage, I could not help but find this rather impressive but also, given what we'd already witnessed, felt anxious for the cat's fate! High drama and explorations of the human condition are not to be found here, credit to the AG team for being bold and bringing a play as dark and guiltily entertaining as this to the local stage, showing they're not afraid of putting on something to cater for every taste. Sardines Review by Michael Cove Set in 1993, against a backdrop of the Irish troubles, Martin McDonagh's masterful Olivier Award winning black comedy is brought boldly to life in the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse's impressive new staging. Helmed by former Leicester Curve Artistic Director Paul Kerryson, the direction may on the odd occasion lack a necessary spark of imagination, with Barry Fletcher's set design feeling a little too clinical to effectively represent the warm rural cottage in which the majority of the action takes place, however it is the performances from the 7-strong non-Irish cast which really elevate this production. I have been reviewing both professional and amateur theatre for over 35 years now, and not often do you see a performance as complete and dynamic in such a young actor as Adam Gonet's Padraic. His performance as the eponymous madman is nothing short of outstanding. His journey through the various character traits from amiable to explosive - is conveyed with expert skill, charisma and intelligence rarely seen these days. I cannot imagine he will be hanging around too long on the amateur stage. As the air-rifle toting tomboy, Mairead (the lading lady, if you can call Mairead that!), Megan Johnstone is equally as impressive, again demonstrating a commanding presence, expert characterisation and a sparkling, passionate chemistry with Gonet's Padraic. As the audience surrogate's Davey and Donny, the real-life father and son pairing of Charlie and Michael Gallagher are perfectly suited to their respective roles, two relatable everyman characters caught up in the most surreal and nightmarish of situations. Charlie Tomlinson's one-eyed Christy cuts an unnerving presence as the head of IRA splinter group the INLA with fine support from Anthony Morris sarcastic Brendan and Leif Black's naive Joey. Tomlinson really comes in to his own during the big scene 8 set piece and the hilarious country lane sequence. The latter seeing the three INLA boys discussing a whole host of surreal subjects and literary quotes over a couple of tin of Heinz beans.Mike North's pulsing sound design and atmospheric lighting perfectly enhance the various undertones of the piece. The auditorium at last night?s (Tuesday night) performance was just over half full, which is criminal in a production as accomplished as this proves. I urge anyone with an interest in theatre to book tickets immediately PRESS RELEASE Martin McDonagh's hilarious, brutal and deadly multi-award winning black comedy opens at the Altrincham Garrick playhouse on Monday 2nd March, running until Saturday 7th March. It is directed by award winning director Paul Kerryson. Paul Kerryson says: "During my recent time at Curve theatre in Leicester, a highlight was directing local talent in exciting plays and musicals, so I am especially thrilled to be working with such a young, talented cast in this community production of one of my favourite plays. Wee Thomas was a friendly cat. Who knocked him over on a lonely road on the island of Inishmore, and was it an accident? His owner, the handsome and very mad Padraig, will want to know when he gets back from a stint of torture and mayhem in the North. Padraig loved Wee Thomas more than life itself! Combining razor sharp, outrageously funny dialogue with a dash of violence, this is a wild night at the theatre not to be missed! The Lieutenant of Inishmore was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2001 where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The sell out Broadway run also received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play. The Lieutenant of Inishmore workshops and pre and post show discussions with the director and the cast are available on request. Please Note: The production contains violence, adult humour and frequent strong language.

Which partly explains why I was so engrossed in?Abandonment, Altrincham Garrick's latest production. The writing is pretty special too, with Kate Atkinson treating us to some memorable lines. She's equally adept at conveying both frivolity and far darker emotions in a piece that is refreshingly grown up.'Abandonment' has a feel of Stoppard's 'Arcadia' and while some of the characters spend time pondering life's great questions, it is easier to understand, thank goodness, than the aforementioned play. Elizabeth (Beverley Stuart-Cole) sets up home in a rambling Victorian house and the lives of her and her dysfunctional family become intertwined with the lives of the previous, Victorian occupants. The house has a guilty secret and all is eventually revealed in a patient, compassionate play. Pieces as meaty as this need a strong cast and director Alan Rothwell has just that. April Couronne ensures you care deeply about the tragic Agnes, even though you don't see that much of her on stage and Mike Shaw makes certain you hate every bone in the philandering Merric's body. Similarly, Sarat Broughton is a study in nastiness as Laetitia. A haunting and affecting play, this is not to be missed. Nice set, too. Star Rating ★★★★

< Back Run for Your Wife ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 24 July 2013 Run for your Wife is described by the critics as 'British comedy at its best'. Ever popular, Ray Cooney's award-winning play tells the hilarious tale of John Smith, a London cab driver, who literally has two lives, complete with two different wives! Somehow, he manages to juggle them both without arousing suspicion until he gets caught up in a mugging, and he wakes up in a hospital which is where his unscrupulous world starts to unravel and hilarity ensues ! One of the most successful farces in the Garrick's back-catalogue made this play a must for the 100th season. Seen again, or for the first time it's bound to be a hilarious night out. It's about a bigamist attempting to keep his two spouses apart. The miscreant, John Smith, a taxi driver, uses his shifts to alternate time with Mary in Wimbledon and Barbara in Streatham. What a mess Jonathan Black's character gets into as, at an increasingly fast pace, he invents far-fetched lies to keep his secret. He's a lucky fellow to have two such adoring wives. Beverley Stuart-Cole's Mary and Ros Greenwood's Barbara both enjoy some hanky panky. They react like lightening to unexplained happenings. Two other blokes add to the mayhem. One is Stanley, Mary's unemployed neighbour. played with amusing bewilderment by Mike Shaw as he, too, gets caught up in the deception. The other is Barbara's neighbour, the effeminate, Bobby, a camp Brian Howlett Brian delicately flicks his hair with his hand just like Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served! Two Detective Sergeants played by Andrew Higson and Brian Tickle also get entangled in the web. Without physically splitting the homes, Set Designer Stephen Bradshaw clarifies who lives where. The ending is happy though unexpected. This masterpiece, directed by professional actor Alan Rothwell, who also has a small part, follows the rules of farce to a tee. The teamwork is exceptional, the timing immaculate and, of course, it's all played straight. Highly recommended! Star Rating ★★★★★ NODA Review by Kevin Proctor I was surprised to learn that this farce is relatively modern in comparison to others, the piece was written at such a turning point in society in terms of opinions which has resulted in this piece not ageing well which is a tremendous shame as (despite its un-PC views) it's actually quite a good one! Director, Alan Rothwell quite rightly mentions in his directors note that a lot of actors look down on farces as being down-market, but 'Run for your Wife' is certainly a hidden gem, though I can see why it doesn't often get an airing with its dated camp humour and offensive views on same sex relations and transvestites etc. The times when people used a limp wrist and popped knee to symbolise someone is 'that way!' quite cringe worthy for a modern theatre goer. It's also not so easy to update the play with mobile phone technology making it easy to communicate with people out and about, the play (unless completely re-worked) wouldn't believably translate to modern times. Ray Cooney (writer) has indeed updated this play as a screenplay (under the same title) which starred Danny Dyer and Denise Van Outen in 2013, this was an attempt to rework it and place it in modern times though, unfortunately, critics still slammed it as being 30 years out of date. The opening 'mime' with the two wife's (Beverley Stuart-Cole & Ros Greenwood) anxiously waiting for their husband (Jonathan Black), who is late home, set the scene beautifully - this, followed by the first two pages of dialogue between the two wife's was comic farce writing at its best - magic! The casting was 'obvious' and I felt it was a little on the safe side, however - no question about it - we had a fine selection of skill on display with a cast more than capable, each of them delivered their parts as they should be and as required. The the real comic turn of the piece for me is Mike Shaw as Stanley, the well-meaning attempts to help only lead to even more misunderstandings which resulted with the biggest laughs, my personal favourite being when the detective asks; 'Do you know what an accessory is'? to which he replies 'Handbag!'?'Run For Your Wife' may be a dated play but the mix-up comedy format works very well today in the hands of this talented cast and crew.

It is a story of love, courage and determination and also of the Shell Seekers itself, a painting which threatens to tear the Keeling family apart. Rosamunde Pilcher's 1987 novel has a strong autobiographical element which secured her an international reputation. The play has been adapted by Terence Brady and Charlotte Bingham previously renowned for such successes as Pig in the Middle, Take Three Girls, Upstairs Downstairs, No Honestly! And Nanny. Anyone who sees 'The Shell Seekers' at Altrincham Garrick will come out feeling such an opinion is ill founded as there are some marvellous lines to enjoy in this engrossing and uplifting theatrical journey. Based on the novel by Rosamunde Pilcher, 'The Shell Seekers' tells the story of Penelope, a beacon of decency who is looking back on her life and loves. When she's not being plagued by her selfish and grasping grown up children. By far the most obnoxious is Nancy, expertly played by Pam Nolan. This horrendous woman treats her husband like she treats her dog. A strong cast led by Carole Carr as the saintly Penelope ensure that emotionally, there's no place to hide for the audience and director Angie Wetherill has obviously nurtured this production with tender, loving care. Moving and warmly funny, The Shell Seekers is an absolute gem and a rewarding experience for both sexes. A must see. Star Rating ★★★★

While I have to confess the TV show was never one of my favourites, the scripts are top notch and Alan Rothwell?s production more than gives you a flavour of the original. It isn't easy for any theatre company, amateur or professional, to take on roles so inextricably linked with the household names who played them the first time around but the Garrick has many fine character actors in its ranks. Particularly impressive are Allan Taylor as Captain Mainwaring and Allan's physical resemblance to Arthur Lowe, who played the pomoous military man in the original show, is uncanny. And so is the way Charles Foster captures the dithering mannerisms of his right hand man, Sergeant Wilson. I also defy anybody not to warm to Andrew Higson's performance as the wet-behind-the-ears mother?s boy Private Pike. The stage version consists of three episodes of the sitcom, including the one in which the hapless Home Guard platoon are left to guard a captured German U boat crew. Personally I wouldn't leave this lot in charge of a bunch of toy soldiers and, as you might expect, chaos ensues. Good clean fun for the whole family. Cats was first performed in 1981 and has been delighting fans around the world ever since, being the sixth longest running musical in the West End’s history. The musical is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T S Eliot and features the well-known characters of Grizabella, Run Tum Tugger, Old Deuteronomy, Mister Mistoffeles and more of the Jellicle alley cats. The Altrincham Garrick’s production is categorically not amateur, this is a show which has been delivered to international standards - everything from costume and set to cast and those all-important vocals; it’s truly outstanding and all members of the cast and crew should be commended highly. Firstly the staging is very clever by Stephen Bradshaw; featuring rooftops and chimneys maximising the space on stage to its full potential and once the cast take to the stage striding through the audience in the overture - you’re struck by how intricate and stunning the costumes are - Mike Shaw has done a stellar job indeed. But the biggest attribute to this production is the cast, I guarantee you will be in awe within the first 10 minutes if not sooner. Old Duteronomy played by Wayne Holt has great presence, Rum Tum Tugger is played by Kevin Senduwala and has just the right amount of swagger. Bethan Jackson is entertaining as Jennyanny Dots with buckets of energy and Abby Walton and Caitlin Medcalfe as Rumpleteazer and Mungojerry have a playful chemistry on stage which is infectious. I can go on; Greg James as Munkustrap is a perfect casting and James Glasgow plays Macavity with just the right amount of mystery. The routines are sublime and when you’re sat in the third row; it simply blows you away - the sheer talent on stage. The vocals are all note perfect throughout the evening but I must say Vicky Clarkson’s rendition of Memory as Grizabella will leave the hairs standing on the back of your neck, it’s outstanding. The vocals are accompanied by a live orchestra under the baton of Mark Goggins which gives this production even more authenticity. You don’t get productions to this standard very often, take advantage of such an entertaining production in the area; I strongly recommend getting your tickets, I may go again, and again before the weeks out. Cats directed and choreographed by Deborah Kate Norris continues at the Altricham Garrick until the 25th May with limited availability on Friday and Saturday. Verdict: Musical theatre at its very best, a dynamic cast & creative team sure to entertain! Reviewer: Max Eden Star rating ★★★ ★★ REVIEW BY RICK BOWEN (STAGESTRUCK) THE curtain comes down on an outstanding season at the Garrick, with a magical production that’s sure to live for long in the Memory of audiences who see it. Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one. Memory is the best song in the show by a mile and becomes a thing of beauty when sun by singers as gifted as Vicky Clarkson and Neve Finnigan, who play Grizabella and Jemima respectively. It made me forget the weaknesses in Lloyd Weber’s score which are sporadic but still there. Based on TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, it’s a major triumph for choreographer Deborah Kate Norris, who, along with her assistant Val Watkinson, has helped create a feast for the senses, served up by a vibrant and exciting, largely young company. When it comes to the dance routines, the cast are highly versatile, whether they’re performing slinky, sensual, at times balletic routines or mesmerising tap numbers in this celebration of all things feline. Judging by the standards achieved in this show, which has the consistently impressive Mark Goggins as its musical director, the future of amateur musical theatre in this area looks very bright indeed. Mark Goggins simply doesn’t have it in his DNA to preside over a bad show. The magical element of the evening is enhanced by a rooftop set designed by Stephen Bradshaw. It was also pleasing to see children in the audience - I can’t think of a better way to introduce them to an art form that has yet to lose its power over me, 30 years and several hundred reviews later. When word gets out as to just how breathtakingly brilliant this show is I expect tickets to be snapped up. So book now to avoid disappointment. Make sure you don’t miss this evening of unforgettable musical escapism. Star rating ★★★★★

< Back Shakers Re-Stirred ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 19 June 2017 The play is a sequence of quick-fire humour interspersed with serious monologues, which starts off very light hearted. We are given a glimpse of this world by the four long-suffering waitresses who work at the local trendy cocktail bar. Each actress's main character has a very distinct personality and every one of the actresses used their own particular style to portray these four quite different young girls. As the story unfolds, the waitresses take turns to describe their character to the audience. Multi-role-play and cross cutting are used frequently within the play to allow the audience to meet a wide range of characters. Production Photographs by Paul Wilson [gallery ids="https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Shakers1.jpg|,https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Shakers2.jpg|,https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Shakers3.jpg|,https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Shakers4.jpg|,https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Shakers5.jpg|,https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Shakers6.jpg|"] Rehearsal Photos [gallery ids="https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/WP_20180114_16_41_53_Pro-Small.jpg|,https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/WP_20180114_16_03_15_Pro-Small.jpg|,https://www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/WP_20180114_15_24_47_Pro-Small.jpg|"] Cast Adele:?? ????????Megan Relph Nicky:? ??????????Laura Crow Carol:?????????? Tabitha Hughes Mel:? ???????????Maya Szlachetko **** FOUR STAR REVIEW by Julia Taylor for Sale and Altrincham Messenger **** Raising a glass to cocktail comedy at Altrincham Garrick SHAKERS Re-stirred, at the Garrick?s Lauriston Studio Theatre, shows life in a cocktail bar seen through the eyes of four hard-working waitresses. The four who play them are all versatile performers as they switch from waiting on to becoming the customers they are serving. John Godber and Jane Thornton, the writers, feature the sensitive side of their natures as well as their sense of humour. Their lives are ruled by an unseen character ? Mario, the bar owner, who is asking them to wear shorts to boost custom. Nicky, Adele, Carol and Mel are played by Laura Crow, Megan Relph, Tabitha Hughes and Maya Szlachetko. Nicky is unaffected by the instruction because she has got a job as a topless dancer on a cruise ship. Adele, a single mother, is desperate to keep her job and is happy to do what she is told. Carol, the most educated of the four, realises that this is sexual exploitation whilst Mel is not too bothered since this is the best of a number of bad jobs. However, she has a secret which could explain her animosity towards Adele. Each of the actors performs a monologue revealing the inner depths of their souls. This cannot be easy yet all come out with flying colours from these and playing the waitresses or other characters. All are on stage for almost the whole 90 minutes of the production which must add to the strain but they don?t show it. They act with enormous energy, sometimes speak in unison and they and we have lots of laughs. Review for Manchester Salon by Johanna Hassouna-Smith Shakers is an all-female play, set in a trendy wine bar somewhere in the North of England. Through comedy, the play deals with modern culture and tackles issues of sexism, female expectations, prejudice, motherhood and job satisfaction. The play tells the story of a typical night in a wine bar (aptly named Shakers) as four waitresses; Carol, Adele, Nicky and Mel struggle through their long shift, serving demanding customers who come and go on their night out. There is always trepidation when you go to watch an amateur production in a theatre you have never been to and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this particular venue and the quality of production. The Garrick is a lovely theatre with two spaces, the main theatre and The Lauriston Studio, where Shakers was performed.?It?s a tiny auditorium with lots of atmosphere for an audience of under 50 people.?Just enough for the intimacy of this wonderful production The play is a joint collaboration between playwrights John Godber and his wife, Jane Thornton. Jane?s credits include Say It with Flowers , All the Fun of the Fight and the radio play, Spread a Little Happiness . She writes, acts and directs for the John Godber Company now. John Godber is one of the most performed writers in the English language.?His other plays include Teechers , Blood Sweat and Tears , Up ?n? Under and of course, Bouncers (often considered to be the big brother of Shakers). His plays are energetic, gritty and extremely funny, so I was really thrilled to attend this production and to see what director, Jacqueline Wheble could bring to the stage. In the Garrick bar before the performance, the audience, perhaps a little older than the target audience the playwrights may have been writing for, were served by the cast in-role as cocktail waitresses. The director also mingled among us and light heartedly warned of the spicy language we could expect in the performance. This didn?t seem to stop us all from relishing the content, language and innuendos of the gags. Once inside the auditorium, I found a very polished production and it was hard to critique anything which could be described as ?amateur?. The stage design was simple but effective; a slick bar, complete with neon surround, some chrome bar stools and tables and the odd cocktail shaker.?The lighting and sound both effectively created the cool vibe of this trendy wine bar.?Everything was exactly what was needed to give this production the minimalist design the playwright intended.?This meant we were left with the opportunity to enjoy watching the performers really getting under the characters? skin. The four actresses were all seasoned performers with an accolade of roles under their belts and a few Drama degrees, so it really didn?t have the feel of amateur theatre.?They were so confident, energetic and incredibly imaginative as they swiftly manoeuvred this script, playing multiple roles from the ageing businessmen to the checkout girls out for a 21st birthday. I was desperate to find a standout performer of the four as they were all incredibly talented and shone throughout the entire play. The actors played around 40 contrasting roles in 90 minutes and the high energy in this performance was like watching an acting masterclass.?The cast switched effortlessly from ugly, groping businessmen to drunken teen girls and squiffy, toffee-nosed housewives.?The physicality of the roles were a credit to movement and physical theatre adviser, Scott Ransom .?The script was so incredibly fast paced, I even overheard an audience member muttering ?How on earth do they remember all of these lines?? If I were to pick fault anywhere in Shakers, it would be with the play itself. Whilst we have the fast paced energy of the wine bar, we also have the poignant monologues throughout the play when the waitresses reveal their hopes, their dreams and their past and present lives.?Although this gave the play a real sense of depth, it felt somewhat tiresome toward the end, and possibly needed some edits? But these actresses really acted their socks off and the energy they exuded on that stage was a real joy to watch.?Their rapport with one another and the audience was entertaining from start to finish. < Back Besses o th Barn Brass Band ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 17 July 2019 Established in 1818, when Whitefield was little more than a series of hamlets, the Besses band first took the name Clegg’s Band and consisted of men returning from the Napoleonic Wars. Little is known about the band’s first decades, however they are first recorded as winning a competition to mark the coronation of King George IV on July 19, 1821, with a rendition of God Save The King. They then repeated their success at a celebration of the 1837 coronation Queen Victoria in Farnworth, Bolton, winning a crown for a performance of Hail! Smiling Morn. Formally emerging as an all brass band in 1853, Besses became an increasingly professional and successful outfit meaning by 1892 they were the holders of every major open competition cup in Britain. In the early 1900's the band began tours based on the railway network and would stop at each station along the way to perform, travelling for months at a time.
