< Back Oliver! ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 2 June 2014 The Garrick is thrilled to offer another treat for the Christmas season! Lionel Bart's brilliant adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist has enjoyed sell out runs since its London premiere in 1960 and the award winning screen version in 1967. The famous story of orphan Oliver and his sometimes frightening journey to London where he encounters the dubious friendship of the artful dodger, Fagin and Bill Sykes is packed with favourite songs including, 'Food, glorious food', 'Consider Yourself', 'I'd Do Anything' and the classic, 'As long as he needs me'. This new version will bring the Victorian streets of London to life again and is sure to leave you asking for more! A tribute, of course, to the considerable acting skills of the late Oliver Reed, who was far more than just a headline making hell raiser. Likewise, Charlie Tomlinson oozes menace as the notorious baddie in Altrincham Garrick's triumphant production of Lionel Bart's classic show. The directing team, the dream team, that brought us Gypsy earlier in the season have been re-united for a musical that deserves far more than the empty seats that greeted me on opening night.?No excuses - the TV isn't that inspiring and the weather not that bad. I studied in Sheffield where the climatic conditions we currently find ourselves in would have been considered balmy. Well no, but you get the gist. Nathan Ng strikes the balance between being suitably cherubic and endearingly feisty as Oliver and he's sharing the plum role with Michael Gaughan. I hope you like a challenge Michael, as Nathan also has one of the purest singing voices I've ever heard. You'll be biting your bottom lip during the beautiful number, Where Is Love For me, that's not the best song in the show. Who Will Buy? during which Oliver is serenaded by an assortment of street vendors congregating below his bedroom window, is my personal favourite, beginning as it does with a haunting solo. Doubling up seems to be the order of the order of the day here, with Stephanie Niland sharing the role of Nancy, Bill Sikes' long suffering but bafflingly loyal girlfriend. Her rendition of As Long As He Needs Me, in which this ultimately good sort tries to put the case for her devotion, is one of the high points of the show. Star Rating ★★★★ Remotegoat Review An Oliver to be remembered - A show to make you forget your post Christmas credit card bill, Oliver! simply must not be missed. The whole cast shine. You start to feel hungry even before Nathan Ng's Oliver asks for more. Just the sound of 17 boys voices singing Food, Glorious Food with such gusto starts your tummy rumbling. Your appetite is whetted in a different way by the quality of this Dickens' tale performed by a fantastic cast who are a delight. Young Nathan does wonderfully well in the title role and we are on his side as he faces hardship at the work house, from his undertaker boss, and in the hands of his counterpart, the Artful Dodger, a cunning but likeable Rob Dutton. These two young actors are so impressive, it is hard to realise they are only 12 and 16 respectively. Despite the jollity of the dancing (choreographed by director, David Needham) and songs like Nancy's Oom-Pah-Pah, this show has it's sadder moments. The one that stays with you is Nancy's murder by lover, Bill Sykes. Her loyalty to this evil man is hard to understand and you conclude the only answer is that she loves him. Charlie Tomlinson's despicable Bill makes scoundrel Fagin, look like an angel. Stephanie Niland sings As Long as He Needs Me both poignantly and beautifully, illustrating well her attraction to this bastard. The quality of Stephanie's voice is as good as any professional. Although Fagin is a criminal who uses children to pick pocket for him, Steven Finney projects him as an old man who is genuinely fond of them and acts like a father figure. His rendering of Reviewing the Situation is particularly expressive. A word in praise of the ten-strong orchestra led by Steven Mercer. They are the perfect accompaniment to the many catchy numbers but also add atmosphere. For instance, when Oliver is arrested, the violinist, Rachael Drury, creates an element of surprise and dismay by making a discordant screeching sound on her instrument. Some roles are interchangeable over the course of the production. Other well known Garrick names take over on other nights and because I know them, I can give assurance they will be equally as good as those involved on the first night. The Production Supervisor is Paul Kerryson, the Garrick's new Executive Producer. If, under his guidance, this show is an indication of what is to come, we are in for exciting times. Oliver is one of the best musicals I have seen at this excellent theatre although I have seen many other good ones as well. < Back The Laramie Project ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 20 May 2022 “Laramie is a town defined by an accident, a crime. We’ve become Waco, we’ve become Jasper. We’re a noun, a definition, a sign.” In October 1998 a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, bruised and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay. The hate crime attracted vast attention worldwide, bringing sexual discrimination and violence to the forefront of public discourse. The Tectonic Theater Project, led by their founder Moisés Kaufman, traveled to Laramie in the aftermath of the murder with the intent of creating a theatrical portrait of a town coming to grips with horrible, hate-fuelled violence. Over the course of a year and a half, the group interviewed over 200 subjects, some directly related to the case and some regular citizens of Laramie. Out of these interviews, journal entries, and found texts, The Laramie Project was born. Hailed as one of the most captivating and encompassing pieces of contemporary theatre, the play shocks, challenges, and moves all who watch it as it reveals the lowest depths of hatred and greatest heights of compassion that lies within all human beings in any seemingly average community. Warning: Contains strong language, homophobic language and graphic discussions of violence and hate crime and scenes which some may find upsetting. I thought the Yanks would simply drain all the warmth and humanity out of this story of a group of unemployed steelworkers who turn to stripping to raise some cash. How wrong I was. This engaging story has travelled well across the pond and Altrincham Garrick's revival production is even better the second time around. The Full Monty is a fabulous feel good musical and this time the cast are much more self assured in their roles. They sound even better too, performing accomplished renditions of songs teeming with humour and heartache. In terms of the score, its strength, for me, lies in the lyrics rather than the music. The music is, by and large, forgettable, while some of the lyrics are inspired. Jerry Lukowski and Dave Bukatinsky are the show's pivotal and most interesting characters. Divorcee Jerry is on the verge of losing access to his son because he can't keep up the maintenance payments to his ex-wife and podgy Dave's self esteem has sunk to an all time low since losing his job. Performances from the entire cast are exceptional, but I was particularly impressed with John Wood and Simon Pickup as Jerry and Dave and Daniel Shaw as Jerry's son Nathan. David Leathlean is great value as the prim and proper Harold Nichols and Adam Whittle displays some deft visual comedy touches. The Full Monty isn't just about male strippers - it's about friendship, loyalty and the resilience of the human spirit.

< Back Black Comedy ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 30 July 2013 A perfect example of 'What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive'! Sculptor Brindsley Miller attempts to juggle his fianc?e, her father, two neighbours, his ex girl-friend (who turns up unexpectedly) and a millionaire collector who is (Brindsley hopes) going to buy some of his work. Oh! - and all this during a power cut which plunges his flat into darkness. Peter Shaffer makes brilliant use of this device to produce an evening of hilarity. CAST Brindsley Miller Trevor McKie Carol Melkett Laura Whitehurst Miss Furnival Janet Slade Harold Gorringe Brian Howlett Colonel Melkett John Westbrooke Clea Bev Stuart-Cole Schuppanzigh Ian Fensome George Bamberger Steve Williamson Review of Black Comedy by Julia Taylor for remotegoat A tangled web of mishaps A tangled web is woven in Peter Shaffer's Black Comedy written in the 1960's. Sculptor Brindsley Miller attempts to juggle his fiancee, her father, two neighbours, his ex-girlfriend (who turns up unexpectedly) and a millionaire collector who Brindley hopes will buy his work. All this happens during a power cut! The plot thickens when Brindsley, well put over by Trevor McKie, "borrows" antique furniture (for ease of lifting, just boxes) from his next door neighbour, Harold , a camp Brian Howlett, in order to impress Mr Bamberger, a rich German (Steve Williamson) who has agreed to view his art. Mayhem ensues when Harold returns unexpectedly. Instead of getting the lights fixed by an electrician who just happens to arrive and who they mistake for the art collector, Brindsley is anxious for them to remain unfixed so that he can attempt to smuggle back Harold's furniture. This play is different from others because when the mains fuse blows and the cast grapple in the dark, the audience can see them perfectly. Before that, when they are supposedly in the light, all is darkness. It is a credit to the cast that in bright light they can walk around hesitantly as though in darkness. This leads to interesting encounters due to mistaken identity. Just after the power cut, suppressed spinster neighbour, Miss Furnival arrives, devours a large gin and, although a non-drinker, thoroughly enjoys it. Janet Slade is delightful in the part as, inebriated, she lets it all out. Two other women also make us laugh. They are Laura Whitehurst as Brindsley's dumb fiancee, Carol and Bev Stuart-Cole as the ex-girlfriend who turns up unexpectedly adding to the dismay of the, by now, frenetically energetic Brindsley. I like the performance of John Westbrooke as the Colonel who spoils his daughter, Carol, a man who Brindsley is anxious to impress so he will agree to their marriage. This play is almost impossible to describe but I assure you you'll love every minute of Steve Williamson's production. It fits in so many angles with perfect comic timing in a short space of time ensuring you'll get excellent value for money in just two hours. And well done Mike North for the lighting. NODA Review by Kevin Proctor Black Comedy is from the pen of Peter Shaffer, who also wrote the acclaimed plays 'Equus' and 'Amadeus'. Black Comedy was first staged in the mid-sixties and the Garrick's production is set firmly in that era, made clear in every aspect and detail from hair styles to costumes and music to suit, but, making the boldest statement of the 60's style is the superb set (designed by Barry Purves) which captures the art d'cor of that period working perfectly, being set in the apartment of an artist. I particularly appreciated the symbolic use of telling the audience what doesn't 'belong' with the use of brightly coloured blocks and shapes, against a backdrop of black and white. The use of simple blocks instead of actual furniture and props was such a unique and original idea which gave an impressive result, putting a bold and inventive stamp of originality on the piece. It soon became clear to me that this entire play derived from one quirky idea; what's dark is light and what's light is dark. This visual opposite, which has been dragged out to the max, is pretty much all what it's about. It can't be an easy task for the players to stumble around the stage as if it's pitch dark and the cast achieve the illusion very well. This is a play where you can really go to town to create some visual, choreographic genius! The play offered numerous laughing points and worthy stunts, in particular, George Bamberger's fall/jump into the cellar! Laura Whitehurst and Trevor McKie as Brindsley and Carol were not particularly suited, the coupling was unbelievable as was their relationship. I appreciate the character of Carol is an annoying and irritating woman but, the danger here is that if the comedy that accompanies this dippy character is not exposed (which it wasn't), all you'll be left with is a character which is simply annoying and irritating. Stealing performances of the piece for me, were the two 'carry on' inspired supporting roles of Miss Furnival - played by the very capable Janet Slade whose final speech was the cherry on top, having us all in stitches of laughter. And Harold Gorringe - played by Brian (Charles Hawtrey) Howlett was superb as the fussy, camp neighbour. Bev Stuart-Cole gave a notable performance as Brindsley's ex flame who's still burning bright, Clea. This was an odd choice of production for the Garrick to present, being a one act piece. The director had included an interval (and chose the perfect spot to do so) but, the show came down before 9:30pm making it a rather short evening. Still, I like the mix of productions offered from the company. The Garrick committee are taking risks when choosing material to present which is an approach I will always encourage, to any group!

< Back Pack of Lies ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 30 July 2013 PACK of LIES abundantly demonstrates HUGH WHITEMORE's ability to choose a real event in recent remembered history to weave his favourite themes of human follies and affections allied to inevitable betrayal by all the protagonists. This intriguing tale concerns true events of the early 1960s. Helen and Peter Kroger, living a seemingly quiet life in a London suburb, together with a certain Gordon Lonsdale, were convicted of spying for the Russians and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, only to be exchanged 8 years later for a Britain imprisoned in Moscow. The fictional side of the story involves their "friends" and neighbours - an ordinary middleclass family. Barbara, Bob and Julie are catapulted into a sordid world of deception and treachery, with Barbara realising too late that the Krogers had betrayed her and that she, in turn, had betrayed the Krogers. ABSOLUTELY UNMISSABLE. CAST Bob Jackson Nick Sample Barbara Jackson Caroline Hickey Julie Jackson Erica Pickard Helen Kroger Ros Greenwood (AWARD) Peter Kroger Graham Simmonds Stewart Jonathan Black Thelma Di Boyer Sally Stephanie Peake Review of Pack Of Lies by Julia Taylor for remotegoat Devious spies hoodwink their neighbours The Jacksons, a homely couple who have lived in their street for 20 years, are taken aback when, in Hugh Whitemore's classic, Pack of Lies, MI5 call. To their disbelief, it soon becomes clear that the friendly Canadian neighbours, who often pop in for a cup of tea, have been telling a pack of lies. After people from the intelligence agency survey Helen and Peter Kroger from the Jackson's bedroom window, they are found to be Russian spies. It is all too much for wife, Barbara (Caroline Hickey) who takes out her feelings on her kindly husband Bob (Nick Sample). She even lashes out at schoolgirl daughter, Julie (Erica Pickard), who knows nothing of what is going on. When she does discover the truth, Erica's character erupts, melodramatically displaying her horror and disgust. MI5 insist that the Jacksons continue to act as normal with their treacherous neighbours. They don't find this easy but carry on with the Christmas get together they have already arranged. Ros Greenwood's Helen Kroger, who uses sociability and apparent scattiness to conceal a laser-sharp brain, quickly senses the tension at the event which she and her introvert, brain-washed, Communist husband, Peter (Graham Simmonds), attend. It's amazing the two families ever became friends in the first place. The Jackson's are dull and unadventurous whilst the Krogers - especially Helen in an excellent portrayal by Greenwood - are glamorous. Director, Alan Rothwell, ensures that their differences are emphasised in other ways, too. Barbara wears dowdy cardigans and Bob, run of the mill pullovers. On the other hand, Helen with her sophisticated hairstyle and fashionable 1960's slacks, oozes glamour which attracts daughter Julie like a bear to honey. Jonathan Black performs well as Stewart, the MI5 official, a formidable yet fatherly figure. Juliet Jones' set reproduces your typical 1960's semi with its black regulation telephone, etc. The most amazing thing about this play is that it is all true! NODA Review by Kevin Proctor How well do you know your neighbours? Hugh Whitemore's 'Pack of Lies' is adapted from a real-life spy case of the 1960's and set in a London suburb. Just suppose a very official looking man from the government knocked on your door and asked to place an 'observer' to spy on the neighbourhood for the good of the country. This is what happens to Bob and Barbara Jackson and their teenage daughter Julie. But what is supposed to only last a couple of days, turns into weeks and stretches the fabric of the family as they must 'hide' the presence of the guests. The Families best friends for near on five years, Canadians Helen and Peter, are suspected of aiding a KGB agent who has stolen NATO secrets. The production pays close attention to 1960's period details, both in the costumes and the set (complete with running water and functioning kettle - nice!). Barbara's lowly cardigans contrasted well with the 'slacks' worn by Helen, while the succession of pullovers sported by Nick Sample as Barbara's husband Bob was spot on. The play teases our interest and gives rise to speculation about where the story was going next, with mysterious phone calls from Julies friend and at one point, I even questioned whether Barbara had some part of the ploy as we see her start to buckle under the pressure. The blackouts were covered as well as they can be with appropriate unsettling music. The action, while often static, was kept exciting which I imagine to be one of the biggest challenges of this piece. This is the second 'Whitemore' play I've seen and both have had the knack to suck me deep in to the story and journey of the characters which, ultimately, gives me, or indeed anyone, a remarkable theatrical experience. Erica Pickard as the Jackson's teenage daughter, Julie, gave us a mature and more than able performance, she brought a good energy with her delivery, the developing relationship between Helen and Julie was sensitively played and Julie's outburst in the final scene, when she realised the truth about the Krogers' activities, was moving. A very intelligent and exciting performance from young Erica, she fitted right in and was equally as confidant and ever professional as the adult players. Stewart (Jonathan Black), the man in charge of the investigation had all the right qualities, mannerisms and intrigue to accompany his role, he does, however have the thankless task of remaining 'professional' and not allowing himself to make his performance more vibrant as the plot unfolds. A very neat performance, I empathise with people with these characters who must remain 'reactless'! Di Boyer and Stephanie Peake gave good support as Thelma and Sally, their conversations with Barbara demonstrated the latter's rising concern about the fact that while her friends were betraying their adopted country, she, in her turn, was betraying not only them but also her daughter. Sally, as short lived as her time on stage was, managed to gain the intended reactions and chuckles. Di Boyer was as sympathetic as her character would allow her to be, successfully holding back in displaying too much emotion or affection to Barbara while still managing to keep her character out of the 'bland' category - which is so often the case with characters such as these. Caroline Hickey is excellent as Barbara, all the lying has turned her into a nervous wreck which she executes superbly as she contemplates out loud 'What is the difference between one lie or another'? Her character feels the brunt of the story as her world and home is turned upside down. Nick Sample gave us a soft and loving man of the house as Bob. His closing narration 'turn' was incredibly touching. Nick is a very easy and natural performer, he translates emotions and delivers with such quality as does Ros Greenwood (as Helen). Ros, an asset to any production, gave us a larger than life character 'as Helen would be' but, and most complimentary of all, was delivered to the perfect level, this part could so easily cross the line and be delivered too melodramatic but Ros gave the perfect balance, an expert of her craft who delivered a very fulfilling performance! This interesting play certainly achieved its director's ambition to provide a few talking points for its audience as we left the theatre. Congratulations to Alan Rothwell and his cast, and to The Garrick for setting the bar for my first play of the year!

< Back Ross and Rachel ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ 10 May 2021 to 15 May 2021 By James Fritz Directed by Carole Carr Performed by Fiona Primrose Filmed on stage at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse. Streamed into your homes. Please note that a unique YouTube Link will be sent to you one hour before the start of the performance. No one told them life was gonna be this way… Ross & Rachel . You know the ones. Will they? Won’t they? On. Off. On again. Off again. On a break. Vegas. Emma. “I got off the plane”… Ross & Rachel tells the mind-bending, heart-breaking story of what happens when a couple that was always meant to be together, gets together. And stays together. James Fritz’s play isn’t about Ross Geller and Rachel Green, the ultimate Friends-turned-lovers. But it’s not – not about them. A dark and uncompromising play that explores romance, expectation and mortality, and the idea of ‘happy-ever-after’ – sold to us by rom-coms and sitcoms, whether it’s Ross and Rachel or Romeo and Juliet – and how this affects our real-life relationships. Suitability: 14+ Contains strong language and adult themes which some viewers may find disturbing.

< Back Something About Simon ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 7 April 2021 [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HcIPId1Zn8&t=3s[/embed] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paul Simon is a name that has cemented itself into the “hearts and bones” of audiences all over the world. As an artist, his name has become synonymous, not only with music, but with cultural history. In this brand-new show, singer-songwriter Gary Edward Jones not only recites the music of one of his idols, but also tells the unique story of Paul Simon combining visuals, stage design and, of course… the music. After years of comparisons, Gary set out on a journey of discovery and for over two years, he lived and breathed all things Simon, creating a show which has received five-star reviews and standing ovations across the UK and has just completed a hugely successful run at Edinburgh Fringe receiving 4 star reviews across the board. A natural storyteller, with charisma and a certain charm, Gary weaves together songs and stories that cross the Atlantic, from New Jersey to the North-west of England. He traces the sometimes-poignant moments in Simon’s life and career, that occasionally mirror his own. With classic ballads like The Sound of Silence, America and Kathy’s Song , to the more upbeat Wristband and The Boxer to the much-loved Bridge Over Troubled Water . The show will have you both reliving and rediscovering these great songs again. Something About Simon is not a tribute show; it is one musician authentically honouring the music of another. For around ninety minutes, allow Gary Edward Jones to take you back to those days and tell you Something About Simon . Our reasonably priced bar will be open before, during the interval and after the show. Free car park for customers and in easy walking distance of Altrincham and local tram and train stations. < Back Last Summer at Bluefish Cove ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 20 May 2022 As the first mainstream lesbian piece of theatre, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove is a seminal work that explores a gay women’s haven, Bluefish Cove, where a group of seven lesbians are spending their annual holiday. Eva wanders into the colony after leaving an unhappy marriage, accidentally finding herself among women that will change her life in more ways than she could ever envisage. Set in the 1980s, this tender play follows these women as they experience love, loss, and everything in between: rooted in subtle and realistic portrayals of lesbian relationships, it invites us to consider love between women in whatever form that may take. < Back Paul Young ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 27 May 2022 He’s been a major star for four decades. Paul Young broke into the big time 40 years ago when No Parlez went to number one and spawned iconic hits like Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home). More success followed with the number one album The Secret Of Association and the worldwide hit Everytime You Go Away, not forgetting an appearance at Live Aid and more. Paul sustained that success – while having fun in his tex-mex band, Los Pacaminos. He’s touring the UK, too, where he’ll meet fans, sing hits and tell stories about his incredible career. < Back CHATROOM - A One Act Play ˂ Previous Production Next Production ˃ to 31 March 2021 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Altrincham Garrick Playhouse are proud supporters of PAPYRUS with our production of Chatroom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A chilling, blackly comic tale of manipulation, cyberbullying and adolescent insecurity. In a quiet corner of the internet, a group of bored, restless teenagers spend their time deconstructing children's literature and the messages in modern pop music. But when a new member joins to share his depression and thoughts of suicide, the conversation takes a darker turn. A powerful depiction of modern-day isolation and the dangerous power of technology, Enda Walsh's play Chatroom formed part of the National Theatre's 2005 Connections season, an annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools. It received its first professional production in the Cottesloe auditorium of the National Theatre, London, in March 2006. Performed by The Garrick Ensemble; a company of 18 - 30 year old aspiring actors from Greater Manchester and Cheshire who perform one production each year as part of the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse Main House Season. The Garrick Ensemble aims to make theatre that is fresh, innovative and exciting. See the very best of local, up and coming talent before they move forward in the next stages of their careers in the Arts. **This play contains strong language and deals with topics including depression and suicide.** Running Time: Approx. 75 Minutes (No Interval) This amateur production of “Chatroom” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk Download the programme for the week's performance. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people in the UK. The national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide aims to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives by breaking down the stigma around suicide and equipping people with the skills to recognise and respond to suicidal behaviour. HOPELINEUK is the charity’s confidential helpline service providing practical advice and support to young people with thoughts of suicide and anyone who is concerned about a young person who may be struggling with life. HOPELINEUK is staffed by trained professionals, offering a telephone, text and email service. Whenever I go to review a production of a play or a show with a small audience it invariably falls into the outstanding category. Chatroom is no exception. For me, live theatre and TV drama is always at its best when shining a light on difficult issues and dragging the audience or the viewer into a darker world, a world you’re relieved to escape when you leave the theatre or turn off the TV. However shocked you feel it can also be an enlightening experience as this evening in the company of the Internet generation is. It’s oh so tempting to envy teenagers as they’re largely free of responsibilities and live to just enjoy themselves. That’s a myth of course. Just ask Jim, the central character in Enda Walsh’s deeply unsettling but ultimately hopeful play. Pining for a dad who suddenly and mysteriously went AWOL and nursing the psychological and physical scars of a difficult home life, this troubled teen is contemplating suicide. Walsh’s brilliant script doesn’t dilute the difficult nature of this difficult topic while at the same time refusing to sensationalise it. Rather he tells this absorbing tale with quiet compassion and you find yourself caring deeply about Jim, forever the outcast.. A young and dynamic cast more than do justice to this exceptional piece of work, expertly brought to the stage by Joe Meighan, the Garrick’s young and dynamic artistic director. Highly recommended. Star rating -**** North West End - Lou Steggals What would you imagine to be on the agenda for teenagers chatting online? Rating current romantic crushes? How mean mum and dad are for not letting them out past 10? Whether the fat German kid would be more likely to win Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory over Charlie Bucket might not feature on your list, but it is the first vignette of conversation we’re presented with as we join our six teen stars of Enda Walsh’s one-act play Chatroom. Described as a chilling, blackly comic tale, Chatroom looks at themes of online manipulation, cyberbullying and teenage depression, as relatively innocent conversations dissecting children’s literature and pop music are punctured by the arrival of Jim, a young man struggling with suicidal thoughts. This show marks the first production by the Garrick’s newly-formed, in-house ensemble which aims to give aspiring 18 – 30 year old actors from Greater Manchester the opportunity to deliver one show a year as part of the Garrick’s wider season. The cast consisted of Elyas Meekcoms (Jim), Olivia Brindley (Laura), Luke Robinson (William), Lizzie Lomas (Eva), Luke Bicknell (Jack) and Holly Gibson (Emily). Given the sensitive subject matter of the play, director Joseph Meighan has been blessed with a very strong and talented cast, with the young actors showing a maturity and artistic skill beyond their years. Aided by a smart set, and lighting design from James Merrington that highlights the sense of isolation, and clever touches with props (one teen swigs Red Bull, another, Capri Sun), each performer creates a distinctive character and there isn’t a weak link among them as they either seek to either goad or support Jim through his depression. It is exceptionally done and, in an age where youth mental health has been badly impacted by the pandemic, is a timely reflection of the dangers of isolation and peer influence, both good and bad. If anything lets this show down just a bit, it’s the musical interludes where, instead of snippets of music, we have entire pop songs that start to drag and risk killing the pace of the piece, especially as the accompanying movement is very repetitive. Also, despite some of the cultural references being updated, this does feel like a play of when it was written (early 2000s). Chatrooms have given way to social media and the absence of this from the script lessens the sense of timelessness. If Walsh were to revisit his script for the post-coronavirus age it could give the show a whole new potency. Nevertheless, the strength of performances still allows us to follow along a sadly familiar path where angst and insecurity can lead to cruelty, despite cries of ‘Be Kind’ from the well meaning, building to a palpably tense ‘will he, wont he’ finale. The cast and crew are to be commended for delivering a powerful reminder of how easy it can be to fall prey to faceless internet trolls, whilst providing a thread of hope that there are also those willing to listen when we are at our most vulnerable. If you or someone you know is struggling with any of the issues raised in this play please visit papyrus-uk.org for further advice and support.
