- Marion Eaves | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Marion Eaves Marion was a nurse by profession, so she brought a demeanour of calm and super efficiency to her Garrick volunteering role as a member of the Props team. She worked closely with John Newton, and some referred to them as 'The Dynamic Duo'. Marion worked for over 30 years from the early 1990's, on countless productions and was also occasionally an ASM. Her contribution to the success of productions on stage cannot be over emphasised. Though generally quiet and reserved, she took a full part in all the social activities at the theatre. Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production A Taste of Honey Altrincham Garrick STUDIO 2025/26 Season - A Series of Manc Plays Ran Sep 23, 2025 - Sep 28, 2025 Age guidance 12+ Venue STUDIO Theatre Running time TBC Tickets Price Range £13 - £15 Description Written by Shelagh Delaney Directed by Carole Carr Living in a filthy tenement bedsitter, 17-year-old Jo is deserted by her nagging peroxided mother, Helen, who is unaware that her daughter is pregnant by a black sailor. To soothe, clean and cook for Jo is Geoff, an effeminate art student, with whom she makes a temporary home. Bruised by insensitivity and rejection, the boy and girl find a very real comfort in each other. A stunning portrayal of the complex bond between a mother and daughter, who – despite their sharp bickering – are both holding on for that taste of honey. This iconic play is a sharply observed portrait of working-class life in Salford in the late 1950s. - Roger Metcalfe | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Roger Metcalfe Without the work that Roger did for the Garrick at the time, the major redevelopment of 1999 would probably not have happened. His immense support for that endeavour mustn't overshadow his many acting roles between the mid 1970s and the mid 2000s, and many patrons at the time will never forget his stage appearances. He was very able portraying the establishment figure that many comedies poke fun at, and equally well as the towering stage presence and brooding intensity that many dramas require. Roger served on the Executive Committee and on the Board of Trustees, and it was his role handling Press and Public Relations in 1998 and 1999 that contributed so much to the redevelopment at the end of that century. - Derrick Kay | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Derrick Kay Derrick joined the theatre in the 1960's. He acted in, and especially directed, many productions, and played an important role in the development of the theatre. He was best known as the Chairman of the Play Selection and Casting Committee for many years, setting a style that was very similar to that used later by Alan Sugar. Garrick auditions could be nerve-wracking experiences for anyone attempting to get onto the acting list, and Derrick retained the final say as to who would be accepted. He would write personal letters to each person who had auditioned, using either "congratulations" or "regrets". It was considered a great honour among the local amateur acting fraternity to receive one of his congratulatory letters. Derrick was determined to maintain the highest acting abilities at the Garrick, an ambition which, to his credit, he achieved. Back to In Memoriam page

Book now for this purrfect Christmas treat – it’ll be a Whitting-tonne of fun! Reviews Rick Bowen at Stagestruck ALL good pantos live or die by their leads and in Conor Collins, who plays King Rat, the Garrick has an actor born to be a baddie. When I saw this. on its freezing cold opening night, Collins managed to provoke the audience into booing and hissing him with little effort on his part every time he walked onstage. Even big kids like me couldn’t resist the temptation to join in, even though us critics are meant to be a snooty, buttoned up bunch. At the other end of the spectrum there are the goodies. Ethan Beer as Dick and Hannah Dorothy as the evening’s love interest, Alice Fitzwarren. Unless you’ve had a sense of humour bypass you’ll find it impossible not to warm to Phil Edwards as Sarah the Cook and there’s a kooky bond between this panto natural and Daniel Ellis who plays his son, Idle Jack. I also really also enjoyed Bev Stuart Cole’s Fairy Bow Bells as the action careers towards it climax. It’s hard to believe Cole has been member at this theatre for more than 30 years, so fresh and invigorating is her performance. Tom Whalley’s script is a mixture of daft dad jokes and a healthy smattering of saucier lines which are aimed obviously at the adults and are sure to go over the heads of the kids. Pantos are a great way to introduce children to the theatre and there was dancing in the aisle during the musical numbers in the second half, courtesy of a group of tots who’d made it their mission to have a good time. Also, how good it was to escape from the pressures of modern life and enjoy an evening of unbridled fun. Until January 2. In an outrageously audacious heist, Charles Ingram, aka the Coughing Major, and his accomplices duped the world’s most popular TV quiz show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, out of £1,000,000. Or did they? And if they did cheat, how did they really do it? James Graham’s thrilling, entertaining and provocative comedy drama, asks you, the audience, to put fingers on keypads and answer the ultimate 50/50: guilty or not guilty? And, for your first question, is QUIZ … A) A play by acclaimed writer James Graham, performed by The Garrick Ensemble? B) A provocative re-examination of the conviction of Charles Ingram, 'the coughing Major', for cheating, following his appearance on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? C) A hilarious celebration of the great tradition of the British quiz show? D) A razor-sharp analysis of the 21st century's dangerous new attitude to truth and lies? Answer: You decide. Nominated for two Olivier Awards including Best New Comedy, James Graham’s smash hit play, Quiz, transferred to London’s West End with sensational reviews in 2018, following a sold-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre. - Val Watkinson | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Val Watkinson Val was a highly valued member of the Garrick, having joined in 1991. She was multi-talented and became involved in every branch of theatre production : actress, director, technical assistant (sound and lights), stage manager, deputy stage manager, ASM, prompt, and producer - as well as being one of the longest-serving members of the Play Selection and Casting Committee. Val was also well known as the Garrick trouble-shooter, solving issues as and when they arose. Most notably, she stepped in at the last moment to direct Aladdin, following the very sad, very sudden death of Terry Chandler in 2013. Val appeared in many plays at the Garrick, including The Pocket Dream , There Goes the Bride , one of the three witches in Macbeth , An Ideal Husband , Fur Coat and No Knickers , and Love on the Dole. Most memorably, she played Vera Duckworth and Ena Sharples in Corrie (her last performance on stage). Her credits as director and assistant director are impressive, and include Private Lives , Return to the Forbidden Planet (three times !), Amadeus , The Sunshine Boys , Hindle Wakes , Catherine Howard and Snow White . After 2012, she was either Assistant Director or Deputy Stage Manager for some of the biggest Garrick musicals and Pantomimes (first with Adam Whittle and then Joe Meighan) such as Acorn Antiques , Grease , Cats , Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , The Little Mermaid , Peter Pan , Chitty Chitty Bang Bang , Aladdin , Dick Whittington , and The Wizard of Oz . Val was also very well known in amateur dramatic circles and was associated with CHADS, Tyldesley Little Theatre, the Wilmslow Guild and especially the Wilmslow Green Room. Every summer between 1991 and 2007, she was involved in the Green Room's productions at Gawsworth Hall, as an actress and, most importantly, back stage working as stage manager or sound or lighting technician. - Phil Gleave | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Phil Gleave Phil's working background didn't really indicate an interest in theatre, with his jobs including miner, fireman, coach driver and bus inspector. However, he first came to the Garrick in the late 1980s, to build sets as a member of the stage crew, and stayed to become a highly valued and legendary Stage Manager actively involved in hundreds of productions. Greatly respected by his peers, he was a straight-talking and very competent person, essential qualities in ensuring productions of the highest standard. Phil had only one obvious weakness : Jelly Babies (see picture) ... especially at Panto time. Outside the Garrick, he had a passion for diesel railway engines and worked as a volunteer at East Lancashire Railways as Responsible Officer, in charge of the running of the engines when the public was in attendance. Previous Next Barry Fletcher Barry was a keen volunteer at the Garrick for over 30 years. Until his retirement, he was a Design Engineer at British Nuclear Fuels at Sellafield and he used his knowledge to design many stage sets and be part of Stage Crew. He was also Workshop Manager for a short spell and was heavily involved in the planning for the theatre refurbishment. He was also an extremely talented photographer and produced a superb dual projector slide show entitled 'A Year at the Garrick' which he used to promote the theatre plus raise funds for the STAGE Appeal. Barry is pictured celebrating his 80th birthday in the bar - he was also a regular attendee for 11am coffee because he knew there were always biscuits or cake available. Back to In Memoriam page

She and her husband Mike were fully involved in the social life of the theatre until they moved away from Altrincham in the late 2000s. Audrey proudly won the competition to invent a catchy name for the fund raising effort in the early 1990's (to raise funds for the theatre renovation). - Frank Boylan | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Frank Boylan Frank Boylan had been a member and regular performer until a couple of years before his death in 2006. His comic timing was superb - he could stop the show by just walking across the stage, as he did notably in A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum . His performance in The Diary of Anne Frank (1976/77) as Anne's father was particularly memorable for its tenderness and humility. He will be remembered mostly for being Frank : a gentle man in all senses of the words. Back to In Memoriam page
- Piaf | Altrincham Garrick
Return to Productions Archive Lauriston Studio Piaf Ran Mar 15, 2022 - Mar 20, 2022 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description “You don’t have to stay in the gutter just because you were born there…” Born Edith Gassion in 1915, no one could have predicted Edith Piaf’s phenomenal rise to fame – from singing in the streets of Paris to becoming one of France’s biggest international stars, her voice is still revered to this day. But her extraordinary talent was matched with an equally extraordinary personal life… Pam Gems has reworked her celebrated 1978 original, " Piaf ." She vividly captures the glamour and squalor, the rise and fall of the complex, fragile, and enigmatic performer Edith Piaf, who continues to be remembered and revered for her exceptional voice and extraordinary life. The play also features some of Piaf’s most famous songs, including La Vie en Rose , Hymne à l’amour and Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien . Reviews WHEN Emily Leeland sings Piaf in this warts and all portrayal of the iconic French star my top lip quivered with emotion and my insides turned to jelly. More than once. Leeland is also every inch the diva in Pam Gems’ captivating play, not holding back when it comes to getting exactly what Piaf wants. Top of Piaf’s list are a career and a man, a man who can live up to her exacting demands. She gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘high maintenance.’ What makes Piaf’s story so captivating is it’s a story of success against all odds, how a young girl abandoned by her mother and raised in a brothel ended up having an audience with a US President. For me, there were echoes of Evita , reminding us that yes, it’s still possible to triumph in the face of adversity. You should feel very jealous of anyone lucky enough to have a ticket for this, because director Charlie Tomlinson and his creative team serve up a theatrical treat here. The production is just over two hours long and it feels like you’ve been in the theatre no more than around 20 minutes. But Leeland’s performance is by no means the only one to enjoy here. Olivia Riley is seriously funny as Piaf’s long suffering and loyal friend Tonie, with the two actresses establishing an effortless camaraderie from the start. The velvety-voiced Steven Finney is excellent as the plain speaking nightclub owner Louis Leplee and I can’t wait for the next production in which he has a bigger singing part. Sam Evans is sure to have you swooning as the silky smooth French singer Charles Aznavour. This is a production that simply must be experienced. A joy and a major triumph for all concerned. Tickets are available from 0161 928 1677 or www.altrinchamgarrick.co.uk . Good news - the Garrick is planning to put on a Saturday matinee to meet demand for tickets. Call the box office for details. - Barbara Fraser | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Barbara Fraser Barbara is best known at the Garrick for her role as Bookkeeper in the 1980s and 90s, when she kept a tight grip on the budgets and expenditure of Department Heads. It was not unusual to receive a late-night phone call asking for an explanation why a particular purchase had been made. Her fun side came out in her regular performances in the Old Time Music Halls in the 1970s and 80s (see photo), and she occasionally took small roles in plays. - Allan Taylor | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Allan Taylor Allan, who joined the theatre in the early 1970's, was undoubtedly one of the finest actors to grace the Garrick stage. With his wonderfully commanding voice, he played the lead in many varied types of roles such as Dr. Bryant in Educating Rita (see photo), Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army, Georges opposite Terry Chandler 's Albin in many productions of La Cage Aux Folles, Danny in Brassed Off and, one of his biggest roles, Salieri in Amadeus . Offstage, he was a pivotal figure in the running of the theatre, both as Chairman of the Executive Committee and (inevitably, given his background as a bank manager) as Treasurer overseeing the finances of the theatre. - The Shape of Things | Altrincham Garrick
Return to Productions Archive Lauriston Studio The Shape of Things Ran Nov 9, 2021 - Nov 14, 2021 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description Funny, intriguing, unsettling and, at times, creepy. It centres on the relationships of four young people and how these change, taking a sardonic look at our preoccupation with surface appearances. What is the relationship between morality and art – what is it acceptable to do in the name of art? When does provocation in art become attention seeking – or worse? Contains very adult language and explicit sexual references. Reviews FIVE STAR REVIEW - Rick Bowen at StageStruck NOVEMBER 10, 2021 IF there was such a thing as a degree in emotional cruelty and how to be a control freak, the cold and scheming arts student Evelyn is sure to walk away with first class honours. And the way in which she turns her doting lapdog boyfriend Adam from bumbling dweeb to fashion conscious cool dude is deeply, deeply disturbing when her real motivation for doing so emerges near the end of Neil La Bute’s exceptional and thought provoking play. Like probably the majority of the audience, I was repulsed and yet fascinated by and drawn to Evelyn, mainly in the hope she would pay for her actions. Altrincham Garrick’s intimate Lauriston Studio is the perfect setting for this wonderful piece which is a feast for the intellect while at the same time, not being smugly intellectual. The play covers everything from society’s obsession with physical perfection to love and relationships, minus the slushy stuff. Love hurts, the old saying goes. But after sitting through this I’m certain it should I’m sure you agree, come with a Government health warning. I had a chance meeting with director Geoff Holman at the theatre’s box office recently and he waxed lyrical about his very gifted young cast. Sam Evans as Adam, Annie Rogers as Evelyn, Sophie Cain as Jenny and Daniel Molnar as Philip give performances of a professional standard, thanks to both their considerable talent and that of Holman, whom I’ve always rated as a very capable occupant of the director’s chair. All four actors are engaging and believable and I hope for very selfish reasons they don’t plump for a career on the professional stage. Make sure you don’t miss this, the Garrick’s best production of the season so far. Photos by Martin Ogden. - Diana Provan (née Harker) | Altrincham Garrick
Previous Next Diana Provan (née Harker) Diana and her husband Joe joined the theatre in the early 1960s, and she soon proved her worth as a very talented actress. She presented many outstanding performances at the Garrick before moving on to professional theatre. She then returned to the Garrick some few years later to direct many of our plays, and once again her exceptional talent shone through with some wonderful productions. Wonderfully imaginative, artistic, dedicated and with a refusal to accept nothing but the best, she became a much loved character at the Garrick. Many actors considered Diana as the best person they ever acted with or performed for. Diana and Joe moved to their beloved Italy in the early 2000s when Joe retired, and lived there very happily, visited regularly by their children Jeremy, Julia and Nicholas and their respective families. - Misery | Altrincham Garrick
Return to Productions Archive Garrick Productions Misery Ran May 1, 2000 - May 6, 2000 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description By Stephen King. Directed by Angie Wetherill. The greatest horror master of our time turns the screws of suspense to lock us into terrifying tension. Best selling fiction writer, Paul Sheldon, is cut off from civilisation by blizzards and is increasingly crippled by the tender loving care of No. 1 fan and nurse, Annie Wilkes. Annie is intent on using all her demonic skills to persuade Paul to change the ending of his latest novel - MISERY. She takes her time, won't be hurried, sparing neither details nor feelings in her quest for satisfaction. Remember the Oscar winning performance by Kathy Bates in the Hollywood movie? This stage version is even scarier... so be warned. Those of our patrons with a nervous disposition are advised to stay at home!! A two hander, it will feature Alison Davis and Dick Sails These two Garrick Stalwarts seem to have been cast as a couple on a number of occasions:- In "A Chorus of Disapproval" as Dafydd ap Llewellyn and Hannah Llewellyn In "When we are Married" as Albert and Clara Parker In "Company" (for Stages & Co) as Joanne and Larry Reviews SAM's view on "Misery" Welcome to Fright Night If you go to see Misery, the latest Altrincham Garrick show, I guarantee you'll shudder every time you hear the words "I'm your number one fan" after watching this dark, at times unbearably tense, psychological thriller. Alison Davis is at the top of her form as Annie Wilkes, the mad medic who makes Nurse Ratchett look like Florence Nightingale. When writer Paul Sheldon has a car crash he wakes up in the home of Annie and soon discovers that his carer needs a check from the neck up. She's crazy about his work to the point of obsession, is prone to the most violent mood swings and loves to play cruel mind games with her patient cum captive. We also discover that this frumpy wacko left her former profession under something of a cloud, suspected of causing the deaths of patients and colleagues alike. Altrincham Garrick audiences will know Alison more for her numerous appearances in amateur musicals but, as far as straight acting is concerned, she's been hiding her light under a bushel for far too long. She's so menacing my stomach turned over several times, and like many of you I winced during the harrowing "hobbling" scene. The acting jobs will flood in after this performance. Dick Sails (Paul) further cements his reputation as one of the Garrick's finest actors and he's highly accomplished when it comes to conveying both total despair and the black humour which brings welcome relief to a depressing script. Director Angie Wetherill must have had a ball working with these two. If you've seen the film you won't be disappointed by this stage version of Misery. The suspense is certainly there and like their big screen counterparts, Davis and Sails are a formidable double act. Unmissable. Previous Next Mike Stocks Mike was a talented set designer, with many of his sets gracing the stage between the 1980s and the early 2000s. Mike spent most of his working life in the profession, designing and working on sets for theatre and TV. He worked in the design department at Granada TV on such classics as Brideshead Revisited until his retirement. Happily for the Garrick, he spent his latter years volunteering. Mike had a great sense of humour and a very quick wit. Having run his own dance band after the war, he was no mean performer on the drums ... as Garrickers often witnessed at the Christmas Draw.
