  • Chris Wetherill | Altrincham Garrick

Previous Next Chris Wetherill Chris was yet another Garrick stalwart who did an immense lot of work in many areas of the theatre. Acting on stage was not his main contribution, although his participation in the bloodthirsty mob during The Scarlet Pimpernel will never be forgotten by those who were there. Chris was Chair of the Board of Trustees and an invaluable Executive Committee member, and he also worked in Lighting, Sound and Set Construction. His professional background in civil engineering helped enormously when such work at the Garrick was needed, and he was vital to the refurbishment of 1999. Chris project-managed the 1999 refurbishment, dealing with architects and contractors, completing the entire job on budget and in time. A miracle worker! The opening show of the refurbished Garrick was Camelot , as a tribute to the company running the National Lottery at the time, because they provided a large portion of the funding. Chris was also an accomplished trumpeter, and he was still scuba-diving when he and his wife Angie moved to Cornwall in his 60s. He is sorely missed. Back to In Memoriam page

  • Sid Horton | Altrincham Garrick

Backstage, he worked as stage crew and in the workshop, and he became known as 'the voice of the Garrick', making numerous public announcements. He also produced a newsletter for many years in the 1980s and was famed for his wicked and wacky sense of humour. Back to In Memoriam page

  • Allan Taylor | Altrincham Garrick

Previous Next Allan Taylor Allan, who joined the theatre in the early 1970's, was undoubtedly one of the finest actors to grace the Garrick stage. With his wonderfully commanding voice, he played the lead in many varied types of roles such as Dr. Bryant in Educating Rita (see photo), Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army, Georges opposite Terry Chandler 's Albin in many productions of La Cage Aux Folles, Danny in Brassed Off and, one of his biggest roles, Salieri in Amadeus . Offstage, he was a pivotal figure in the running of the theatre, both as Chairman of the Executive Committee and (inevitably, given his background as a bank manager) as Treasurer overseeing the finances of the theatre. Allan was a giant of the Garrick whose overall contribution to its success cannot be underestimated. Back to In Memoriam page

  • Neville's Island | Altrincham Garrick

Return to Productions Archive Garrick Productions Neville's Island Ran Feb 21, 2000 - Feb 26, 2000 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description By: Tim Firth Directed By: Dick Sails Designer: Stephen Bradshaw What a cock-up! Four out-of-condition businessmen get themselves marooned on an island on Derwentwater during a team-building exercise. Confident of rescue (at first), they prepare to dine on a shared sausage, but fog rolls in, they are menaced by wildlife and their SOS flares go unnoticed by November 5th revellers. The 'bonding' exercise turns into a carnival of recrimination with a surreal denouement. CAST Charlie Cook as Neville Barry Spencer as Gordon Hugh Everett as Angus Mark Edgar as Roy Reviews Sale & Altrincham Messenger's Review Team building is taken to extremes in 'Neville's Island', Tim Firth's testosterone driven comedy which is currently playing at Altrincham Garrick. A group of businessmen find themselves marooned on an island and try to come to terms with each other's irritating little foibles. It's a temperamental cauldron which takes seconds to boil over and when it does, it's impossible not to laugh. The brash Gordon gets the best lines, haranguing Neville for his inept leadership, Roy for his Christian beliefs and Angus for his uptight manner. But their experiences bring out the best in Neville and Angus, while smart alec Gordon is well and truly put in his place. All four characters will strike a chord with anyone who has worked in an office but they aren't stereotypes. The writer puts enough flesh on their bones to make us like and actually care about these guys. We all know someone like Gordon would be a nightmare to work with, but he's very funny, isn't he? The play does contain bad language but I felt it was in context. After all, when you're cold, wet and hungry minding your p's and q's won't be too high on your list of priorities. Barry Spencer seems to have cornered the market when it comes to playing rough types, and anyone who sees his Gordon will agree he does them superbly. Hugh Everett is a very believable Angus, the human equivalent of the cowardly lion and Mark Edgar grows on you as the screwed up Roy. But the real star of the show is the authentic island set created by Steve Bradshaw and his team. Take a bow guys, you deserve it. Return to Productions Archive Garrick Production Present Laughter (2022) Lighthearted Comedy Ran Feb 28, 2022 - Mar 5, 2022 Age guidance Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description CANCELLED PRODUCTION By Noel Coward Directed by Carole Carr At the centre of his own universe sits matinee idol Garry Essendine: suave, hedonistic and too old, says his wife, to be having numerous affairs. His life is spiralling out of control… He is plagued with worry about his looming theatrical tour of Africa, being middle aged, his receding hairline and the friends who bring their bizarre problems to him. Engulfed by an escalating identity crisis, as his sprawling myriad of relationships compete for his attention, Garry’s few remaining days at home are a chaotic whirlwind of love, sex, panic and soul-searching. Noël Coward’s Present Laughter premiered in the early years of the Second World War just as such privileged lives were threatened with fundamental social change but now this play is a surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness and, of course, is extremely funny! Unfortunately, our production of “Present Laughter” by Noel Coward has had to be cancelled due to an illness within the cast. The illness is not related to Covid-19 and this does not affect any other production. Ran Apr 7, 2022 - Apr 24, 2022 Age guidance 5+ Venue Running time Tickets Price Range Description By Roald Dahl Adapted by David Wood It’s the half term holiday and George Kranky is looking forward to a break from school when a letter from Grandma arrives announcing that she is coming to stay – that very day! Soon she is making George’s life miserable with spiteful comments and demands for doses of medicine! But one day, when his parents leave him alone with the grizzly old grunion, George takes his chance and sets about creating a brand new medicine to cure her of her cruelty. Little does he know that his perilous potion will be the start of a rather marvellous adventure… This will be Easter Half Term Mayhem at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse! This imaginative and entertaining stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s much loved children’s book is bursting with growing grannies, feathery farm animals and bags of frothbuggling family fun. Recommended 5+ Reviews FANTASTIC REVIEW - RICK BOWEN AT STAGESTRUCK WHILE I’m not one of those irritating people who witter on about ‘the good old days’, it was really refreshing to see children completely immersed in a form of entertainment that wasn’t screen based. And big kids like me enjoyed it, too. I been reviewing theatre for 30 years and this was the first time I’d ever seen - well, I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you. This production is also a triumph for the director/designer Sean Duvall for he has designed a set that smacks of fairytale charm and a talented team of puppeteers who successfully transport the audience to a world in which anything is possible. Poor George - played by an engaging Andy Withers - has his school holiday ruined when his grouchy old grandma comes to stay at his family’s farm. She really is a grump, snarling her orders at George and his oh so patient parents, played by Michael Gallagher and Christine Perry. Withers is an engaging and likeable George and instantly won over the youngsters in the audience as he hatches a plan to put the old battle axe well and truly in her place. The panto season may be eight months away but this show has that well known staple ingredient of the panto. Audience participation. But take comfort folks - the jokes are an awful lot better. Hannah Collman, far, far, far younger than the role she is playing, is really good value as Grandma, perfectly capturing her mannerisms and with a voice that could, quite easily, curdle milk. The world may be a bad place at the moment so what better than 90 minutes of good, clean fun to whisk us away from these unprecedented times? Until April 24. Return to Productions Archive Garrick Productions Fatal Attraction Ran Jan 20, 2020 - Jan 25, 2020 Age guidance Venue Main House Running time Tickets Price Range Description While at her beach house, (a remote cliff side cottage on Nantucket Island) sorting out her divorce, movie star Blair Griffin spots a paparazzo who has been stalking her. She takes a bold step to shake him loose, setting in motion a series of shocking and terrifying events. The unconventional Lieutenant Braden delves into sinister motivations to unravel the plots within plots in this thrill-a-minute action mystery. A Fantastic Mystery Thriller (not to be confused with the film of the same name). Reviews Review by Rick Bowen for StageStruck FIRST things first. This is nothing to do with the steamy thriller starring Michael Douglas but rest assured dear theatregoer, it is just as compelling and just as captivating. We meet one of the most fascinating female characters I’ve seen on any stage, amateur or professional, in the shape of actress Blair Griffin, who apparently witnesses the murder of her ex husband at her hilltop retreat. But all is not what it seems in Bernard Slade’s cleverly crafted and darkly funny thriller as we see another side of the enigmatic fading film star, brought so engagingly to life here by Garrick debutante Antonia Whitehead. Even I felt spooked as she played the victim - Blair just never stops acting and can turn on emotions as easily as most of us would turn on a tap. Whitehead’s performance is so convincing I’m certain her first performance on this stage won’t be her last. But has Blair met her match in seasoned and cynical cop Gus Braden - an outstanding Nick Sample - in a play that’s sure to get the audience’s tongues wagging afterwards? Beverley Stuart Cole gives her best acting performance to date as Blair’s lush of an agent, Maggie Stratton. Fatal Attraction is a major triumph for Director Bill Platt and his creative team and it would be a crime - pun intended - if theatre as good as this failed to play to packed houses. You really have no idea what’s coming next in a piece that’s perfect for dark, winter nights.. A real tale of the unexpected, this one. Highly recommended. Cast (in order of appearance) Ruby Birtle - Georgia Geupel Mrs Northrop - Alison Davis Alderman Joseph Helliwell - Richard Sails Maria Helliwell - Alice Potter Councillor Albert Parker - Mike Shaw Annie Parker - Christine Perry Herbert Soppitt - Hugh Everett Clara Soppitt - Ros Greenwood Gerald Forbes - Anthony Morris Nancy Holmes - Olivia Tenquist Henry Ormonroyd - Geoff Holman Fred Dyson - Eddie Beasley Lottie Grady - Lyndsey Barker Rev Clement Mercer - David Richardson Reviews Review from North West End UK Reviewer: Max Eden The Altrincham Garrick theatre continues its stellar 2019 season with J.B Priestley’s When We Are Married all this week featuring a talented cast and a script which is still relevant today. Set in Cleckleywyke, a fictional town in the heart of Northern England in 1908. Three highly respected couples get together to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversaries, but the festivities are brought to a sudden halt by a shocking revelation which sees home truths fly like confetti and conjugal rites turn into farcical fights. Directed by Carole Carr; this production still manages to be relevant with a script which has aged surprisingly well, packed with gentle humour throughout. The staging is reminiscent of a lavish parlour room of the 1900s and looks every bit the part with furniture and plush fit of the era, it’s nice to see such attention to detail going into the props, costumes and staging of these productions. The ‘anything but amateur’ cast bring the JB Priestley script to life on the Altrincham stage with all delivering noteworthy performances with no exceptions. The three couples of which the plot centres around are played by six extremely talented actors; Mr & Mrs Helliwell played by Richard Sails and Alice Porter, Councillor Parker and his wife played by Mike Shaw and Christine Perry and Mr & Mrs Soppitt played by Hugh Everett and Ros Greenwood - all take the roles in their stride and look to be having a lot of fun on stage, displaying some great examples of visual comedy from them all; especially Ros Greenwood and Mike Shaw who impressed me throughout. What a gurn Mrs Soppitt has! The entire cast of fourteen all make this production extra special; Ms Northrop played by Alison Davis and Ruby played by Georgia Geupel add extra humour and warmth to this play, with tremendous comic timing! The photographer and reporter played by Geoff Holman and Eddie Beasley both have loveable personalities that the audience lean towards. Especially when one gets tipsy! Anthony Morris plays the smug Organist Gerald Forbes alongside Olivia Tenquist as Nancy Holmes, his romantic interest. Lindsey Barker plays Lottie Grady and David Richardson plays Reverend Clement Mercer to complete the cast. I must be honest; I am in complete awe of this ensemble and how this production cleverly delivered this well-known play with energy and vibrancy. I have seen different versions of ‘When We Are Married’ in various theatres over the years but this truly is the best I’ve seen. Altrincham Garrick is not amateur theatre; it always delivers quality entertainment with a ticket price which is the fraction of the price of big touring productions. Verdict: the best production of this play I have seen, Terrific throughout! Rating: ★★★★★ Review from Rick Bowen - Stagestruck CAROLE Carr’s perfectly paced production, performed by a gifted cast who gel beautifully together, is period comedy at its very best. While the subject matter of Priestley’s classic wouldn’t raise an eyebrow today - three self-proclaimed pillars of their community may not be officially married after all - you have to view the piece through nostalgic eyes in order to appreciate it. The piece takes us back to a north of England that’s long been consigned to the history books, to a time when if you came from another part of the country you may as well have come from another planet. Some of the dialogue sounds silly to 21st century ears but the majority of it is sublime. It seems unfair to single out individual performances for the simple reason there aren’t any weak ones in a production that is amateur only in name. Geoff Holman is great fun as the local newspaper photographer Henry Ormonroyd and I equally enjoyed Hugh Everett as the downtrodden Herbert Soppitt. Then there was Alison Davis, an actress who is always a pleasure to watch as the formidable housekeeper Mrs Northrop and a performer who is new to me, Georgia Geupel, as Ruby Birtle, the housemaid struggling to make sense of the chaos that unfolds in the Heliwell household. Lindsey Barker also caught my attention as the oh so worldly Lottie Grady, so convincing as a woman who has been around the block on many, many occasions. Personally I can’t think of a better antidote to these dark, dank November nights. Highly recommended. A must see for anyone with a sense of humour. It is not an obligation. It is a courtesy extended by the Prime Minister to bring her Majesty up to speed.” Spanning sixty years from the 1950s through to the 21st century, Peter Morgan’s The Audience vividly illustrates what might have happened between the late Queen Elizabeth II and her Prime Ministers behind closed doors during their weekly meetings. From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while Queen Elizabeth II remained constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight, and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain and is exceptional at maths, but he is ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. But Christopher’s detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that turns his world upside-down. Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Mark Haddon’s bestselling, award-winning novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time offers a richly theatrical exploration of this touching and bleakly humorous tale. Age: 12 + Warning: This production contains themes and depictions that may be distressing to some audience members, including descriptions of physical and emotional abuse, discussions of mental health and disability, and strong language. The production also features loud noises and some moments of sensory intensity, reflecting the content of the novel and autistic experience. These will be heavily toned down or removed for the Relaxed Performance. WHAT IS A RELAXED PERFORMANCE? If you are a parent, guardian, or work with people with learning or sensory disabilities – such as those on the autism spectrum – you’ll know how difficult it can sometimes be for them to attend regular theatre performances; loud noises, lighting effects and large crowds can make stage shows overwhelming. At Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, we believe that everyone should be able to experience the magic and wonder of live theatre, and so we are proud to be producing a Relaxed Performance for THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME which will deliver the same theatrical experience but with an atmosphere and attitude in the auditorium that makes everyone feel comfortable and safe. Relaxed Performances are open to anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. This may include children, young people and adults with neurodivergence such as autism, learning disabilities and other sensory or communication needs. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR RELAXED PERFORMANCE: A number of adaptations will be made to the show to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. These include: - Come and go from the auditorium as you wish, even during the show. - Express yourself as loudly as you like, or with physical movement, without judgement. - Access the Theatre and auditorium early. - Extra Staff on hand to support audiences during their time with us. - A quiet breakout space available before, during and after the performance. - Changes to the production’s lighting and sound including reducing the sound levels and removing any lighting that could be overpowering to lessen sensory overload. There’ll be no loud bangs during the performance. - Auditorium lighting will remain on throughout the performance. - Elements of surprise will be reduced. Altrincham Garrick Playhouse are proud to be supporting I AM with this production. At I AM , we’re dedicated to supporting autistic individuals to thrive, connect, and achieve their full potential. • Janet Slade | Altrincham Garrick

Previous Next Janet Slade Janet joined the Garrick in 1986. She appeared in over 70 plays on the Mainstage, in the Studio and at the Edinburgh Fringe. She was a primary school teacher who, for 14 very successful years, became heavily involved in gymnastics, primarily as a choreographer to international level. Her first protégé, Kathy Williams MBE, competed at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. After she retired from the sport, and because she had studied Drama and Dance at Didsbury College, it was natural that she should try her hand at acting. Following a successful Garrick audition, she very quickly showed her versatility by being cast in 4 productions in her first season including as 15-year-old Ruby in 'When we are Married' and as 60-year-old Aunt Edie in 'Sailor Beware'. Known as a director's dream, with immaculate comic timing, she was cast in many comedies and farces, and she used to say that one of her greatest thrills on stage was delivering a laugh line and then waiting a split second to hear the audience explode with laughter. A GMDF and NODA award winning actress, she was also heavily involved off-stage, prompting many productions, serving pints behind the bar, choreographing several musicals, and serving on the Play Selection and Casting Committee. One theatre critic wrote 'Janet Slade might be small in stature but she absolutely fills the stage'. Audiences agreed. Back to In Memoriam page

  • Val Watkinson | Altrincham Garrick

Previous Next Val Watkinson Val was a highly valued member of the Garrick, having joined in 1991. She was multi-talented and became involved in every branch of theatre production : actress, director, technical assistant (sound and lights), stage manager, deputy stage manager, ASM, prompt, and producer - as well as being one of the longest-serving members of the Play Selection and Casting Committee. Val was also well known as the Garrick trouble-shooter, solving issues as and when they arose. Most notably, she stepped in at the last moment to direct Aladdin, following the very sad, very sudden death of Terry Chandler in 2013. Val appeared in many plays at the Garrick, including The Pocket Dream , There Goes the Bride , one of the three witches in Macbeth , An Ideal Husband , Fur Coat and No Knickers , and Love on the Dole. Most memorably, she played Vera Duckworth and Ena Sharples in Corrie (her last performance on stage). Her credits as director and assistant director are impressive, and include Private Lives , Return to the Forbidden Planet (three times !), Amadeus , The Sunshine Boys , Hindle Wakes , Catherine Howard and Snow White . After 2012, she was either Assistant Director or Deputy Stage Manager for some of the biggest Garrick musicals and Pantomimes (first with Adam Whittle and then Joe Meighan) such as Acorn Antiques , Grease , Cats , Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , The Little Mermaid , Peter Pan , Chitty Chitty Bang Bang , Aladdin , Dick Whittington , and The Wizard of Oz . Val was also very well known in amateur dramatic circles and was associated with CHADS, Tyldesley Little Theatre, the Wilmslow Guild and especially the Wilmslow Green Room. Every summer between 1991 and 2007, she was involved in the Green Room's productions at Gawsworth Hall, as an actress and, most importantly, back stage working as stage manager or sound or lighting technician.
